The 2E2 is a troublesome Carb, you'v only got to look on this Mk2 Section to see how many people are having trouble with them!
Best advice is to get a Weber replacement. Im sure i wont be only person to say this.

The 1.3 should have a 2e3 carb not 2e2, this may explain your troubles ;)

I  have always had probs with the carb on mine. When i broke down the other day, the Audi man who towed  me back home said i could get a heated bi-metallic strip, which would cure the problems! I was then in the local VW garage, and they said to force the flap to stay in the hot air direction, using a screw. I did this, and it appears to have sorted the carb icing!! I'm very pleased...

If you dont fancy altering the air box bit, then get some elephant hose, and route the cold air intake round to sit next to the hot air intake, on the exhaust manifold, this should make it run much better, as the air wil be a touch warmer!

Let me know if they work. :)

hi all
I've just sorted the same problem you've got on my Mk1 which is also a 1.3 with a pierburg carb.
On the back of the carb there is a idle cut-off valve with 1 wire going to it ,mine had lost it power supply first i put wire straight to the positive side of the battery and it worked fine now i've got it on an switched live. Now idles fine when hot or cold, i hope this helps with problem

the 1.3 carb is definately the 2e3, the weber replacement is a 32/34dmtr.... usually listed for a polo rather than golfs.. gettin hold of one for reasonable money wont b easy tho as they r rarer than unicorn poo.
