Right,
after owning the valver for the grand total of 12 weeks, i sense all is not well in the go dept..... much kangarooing, rev hunting, stalling, knocking etc.
So, despite knowing i should be checking the ISV, WUR, CSV ....and a host of other acronyms i don't understand! i have decided to give the girl a late christmas present with a trip to TSR.
After a short phone call, i found myself booking a pack A head, kent cams, followers, vernier pulley, 4 branch manifold, stainless exhaust etc, etc......
My question is, what bhp should i expecting from the upgrades?
Also, has anyone dealt with TSR before? Any feedback appreciated.

They're a good bunch - I've not bought a lot from them recently, certainly since Tim left (he's the TS in TSR) but the new owner Neal is a good lad...
AFAIK they don't give you any bull, if it needs doing, they'll tell you...
HTH

hiya mate you might want to have a chat wit GTI-Schmo on here, he has had a tsr engine change i THINK!!??? 1.8 8 v with cams etc 2l block, at the WRC rolling road day last month he produced 120bhp from it,the guys at wrc said its coz its only done 2000miles and they loosen up as they get older,i think he got a chip for it aswell to sort out all the fuelling, its got a real mean sound to it though, with the cams in it runs really lumpy on tickover sounds gud!
-
have alook in the projects section for joes gti wasnt done by tsr and he may have got a few bits from them but far as i know it was all done via a guy locally ie friend of a friend etc..
-
Cheers fella's,
she's booked in for the 3rd of Feb so I'll let you know how i get on....
...think i'll have a mooch round the projects section and see if anyone there has any TSR experience.
Also, i may end up stranded down there on the 3rd (friday night!) anybody live local?

Yeah me, but I've got plans that night!! Sorry dude!!

my brother had a load of work done on his old Audi 90 quattro back in 1997 when Tim Stiles was there I think. He did'nt have any trouble with it, and it was stonking round a wet Castle Coombe on a VW/Audi day....Vivid memories of a Mk2 shooting past on a fast right hander, he touched the grass and spun about 4 times in front of us....brilliant.

Never been to TSR but they are a ruputable company and ive heard good things about them?!
-
yeah mine got done by them 4 years ago and it still going strong , sounds awesome u wont be disapointed
-
as far as i know, joes 8v was not done by tsr, he has sourced a few bits from them but not had any major work carriued out by them. The ECU was from tesh and GStar Dubworld.
They are a good company but i would only want a 8v off them not a 16v.
-
ok soz ppl, thought it was tsr, obviously not,
-
don't know much about tsr but they seem to produce the results. but just to clarify, i got my neighbour to bore my block out, i bought the pistons first so he could do it exactly then had my friendly local vw tuner to port/polish my head/manifold etc then i built it up again myself. but in theory its the same as the tsr 1900 8valve lump they do which they claim does 140bhp. when mines run in i'd hope for something similar.....

dont they do some secret metering head mod on the 16v that makes the fuelling better
-
I did my 2.0 conversion myself and all the TSR boys have been really helpful everytime i phoned up for advice!
Have bought a few nice bits from them but alas couldnt afford a TSR engine

Seen it on the rollers, by christ that thing is a monster!!!!

That would be the WUR mod, not very secret but can be a pain to set up. Vince at stealth does it.
-
nah its different i think, they actually do something to the metering head, some guy on clubgti had it done to get his valver over 200bhp, or is that where the wur is
-
Right, looks like i'm the only person who had a bad time with them, here we go!
Booked my 16v in for a recon head, new valves, guides, stem seals, tappets baisicly the whole top end. When I booked it in they asured me it would be done in a day if I could get it to em for 9am. Which i did, 150 mile drive! So off I went & left em to it. I came back to em at about 4pm, to be asked if my car had ever overheated, the answer is no. It turned out the head they put on was cracked!! So they recond my old one!
So I left it with them & drove the 150 miles home(g/f car). I went to fetch it a couple of days later(another 150 mile) picked it up & it was miss firing really bad. So I drove it striaght back, & after about an hour of messing it turned out to be the dizzy. Now this was after the mecahnic was meant to have taken it home to "test" it.   As part of the fault finding they put in new injectors, which I agreed to pay for. Now the mecahnic said to me keep them to cover the cost of the mileage, spot on thanks very much.  I even tryed to pay for the injectors again before I left, to which I was told not to worry about it.
Of I went home(another 150 miles) on the following Monday I had a rather snotty phone call from TSR telling me I'd left without paying my bill!!!!!!  Remember they had just taken £1400 off me.  They said I owed them £100! After some complaining on my part they charged me £50.  Bunch of clowns imo mate.

TSR lads are ok, Neal who runs it now mega lad even better he,s a scouser  Anyway wrexham my old 16v which was running 9a block, flowed head, kent reprofiled cams, vernier, 50mm inlet, standard exh manifold with powerflow system 181bhp after stealth WUR mod. The WUR (warm up reg) mod is adj to give more fuel at high revvs needed if engine modifed. Also ran 14.6 sec at inters last year in it, Not slow by all means. My bro,s standard 1.8 16v done 149bhp after WUR mod. Lads on clubgti like chris mc's 16v that 200 bhp, but he's running tb's or ian b's 16v 2.0lt 16v but using 276 schricks (mega cams not for raod use) modified inj systems with was done by TSR. There cars cost big bucks to get 16v to 200bhp+.

Cheers for the info folks,
i've got the car booked in for the 3rd of Feb having spoken to Neal.
It's having;
* pack A head (ported, polished and gas flowed)
* TSR 276/268 cams, followers
* Vernier pulley
*4-1 stainless manifold / Jetex stainless system
*Sachs sports clutch / lightened flywheel
They have also promised to have it done in a day, providing i get it to them for 8.30am. Should be fun as i live 190 miles away!
I'm considering getting the 50mm inlet manifold as there's one on e-bay at the moment for 150quid (polished, including rocker cover etc). Does it make much difference?
I'll ask Neal about the WUR modification.
I've had the car on the rolling road today so i know what the improvements have produced (132bhp and 137llb/ft at 5250rpm).
I'll keep you posted.

-
50mm inlet not really worth it, Gary from GVK Motorsport put one on his 2.0 valver and ended up loosing power on a RR.
-
Cheers Slick... 150 quid saved then!
....think i'll spend it on an engine mount / poly bushes.
-
I gained 3bhp on mine with 50mm inlet me and gary (GVK) had our car done day within each other at stealth, Mine came out top 184bhp . He had load of probs with his when fitted 276/268 split cams. Ran like bag of nails. Running twin exh cams still i think. But anyway wrexham with the spec you show getting do at TSR it will be awesome ride, Much respect to you mate. Get nice vibra front mount or EIP solid front, Keep that 4branch from flexing to much.
-
Cheers fella,
I'm hoping to have her fettled, re-spray done and new wheels (refurbed BBS RM's) and suspension done in time for Edition 38 this year... fingers crossed! :nerd:
Also, thanks for the advice with the engine mount. I've just had a read through the performance book written by the bloke who set up TSR and he recommends the same thing, so i've just e-mailed Neal at TSR to fit one whilst its in.
thanks again.

No expence spared  Throw some my way if any left over. Hope it goes well for you mate, Your car's in good hands.
