Title: MK3 GTI 16 Valve Overfuelling?
Post by: MK3GTI_16Valve on 30 December 2005, 13:04
Hi All

I am the relatively new owner for a standard mk3 2.0L 16 valve golf gti and I absolutely adore it. A friend of mine has the Vag software which we ran on the car and it passed except for a faulty knock sensor and front right abs sensor. Replacing the coolant (dirty) fixed the faulty knock sensor, supposedly a common fix but I still have to sort the abs sensor. My question is – Is it possible for a car to be overfueling considering the following? Only getting about 25mpg which is combined dual carriageway (mainly) / city (minimal) runs and im not driving the car too hard. MAF reading is around the 30 mark but when I work it out for myself its around 25 mark consistently (Got 20 euro petrol at 1.05 a litre, that’s  19.048 litres and that’s 4.2 gallons. Only got 105 miles before I was back in the red again, have worked it out over a few runs, always around the 25 mpg mark). It seems to be running perfectly, no prob starting, smooth acceleration and passes on the Vag software. There was a small oil leak (few drops) which we haven’t got to the bottom of, seems to have stopped now though. Have done an engine flush, new oil / filter, timing belt, fan belt, power steering belt and water pump. Im going to keep it mint. I know 16 valve gti isn’t about fuel economy but it does seem very low considering. Any advice or am I looking to much into it ?

Any advice welcome

Just thought id be a bit better but either way whatever it costs ill pay it. Had a fiesta before the golf so its a massive step up. Blasted past a suuped up vectra on the way home from work yesterday. He didnt looked to pleased as too the untrained eye my car looks pretty "normal", while he had the big exhaust, kit etc. The badge might of given it away though when i flew past him. I couldnt stop smiling and for that alone its worth every penny

change your air flow meter i had that problem last week i had a diagnostics guy out to me and it was overfuelling cuz of the air flow meter however if your gonna get one get a new 1 as theirs no way of telling if a second hand one is any good! however it will cost you around £70
