Also, would I need anything else or is it a straight swap if the reverse of the wheel looks like this? Thanks all.

The easiest way to find out is to trial fit a the only difference is that the Mk1 and pre 1990 spec Mk2 have the thinner splined shaft. On the later cars, the spline is larger due to there being a larger splined collar over the shaft. I have never tried it but I have heard that it is a night mare to remove the collar. I think that it is heated and then shrunk on.
Trial fit and if it is not he right one change the boss. I think I got my boss in GSF for about a tenner or thereabouts.

That looks like the larger boss. If it is a later spec gti wheel then it is the larger boss (Horn in the middle). If the boss in the car is the same size then stick it in a bolt it on

A guy is selling this wheel so I don't physically have it to play with. Apparantlyh he bought it new from VW in 1989 - hence the uncertainty as to which size it is. If you think it looks like the larger one I'll risk it and buy. Thanks guys.

Ask him to measure the hole ;)

i think thats the smaller one cause the ring on the outside of mine is alot thinner its like only 5mm thick but i got the larger on the steering wheel and that silly bush on colum :S
