Cheers chap!
Well, i scrapped my 1989 Mk2 Vauxhall Astra GTE Estate, complete with SR Engine, gearbox, GTE bodykit, lowered, etc because of the rust! Gutted....Spent loads on that car and i loved it! Was like a fookin rocket!
So....i was toying with idea of another Vauxhall, until my cousin bought a H-plate 90 Golf GTI 8v.
I loved that car but couldnt afford insurance so i got next best thing....A 1.6 'Driver'!!!
Bought it off an old bloke who owned a newsagent down my cousins road, he didnt want it because steering was too heavy and boot wasnt big enough to fit stuff in (he wanted a Passat Estate). The Golf looked a minter apart from 188,000 miles on the clock on a J-plate 91 and small dent in rear boot lid.
The milage didnt matter cause i had plans to fit GTI or similar engine to it when it finally blew up...unfortunately its now done 211,000 and still going strong!
Anyway, i parted with £500 and that same morning bought a set of Team Dynamics 14" Alloys from a friend with brand new tyres for £100. They went on in the afternoon as did the tinted rear lights that i sprayed with dark tint spray!

Drove the car around like this for a while and racked up the miles to and from work (120 miles a day)!!!
I was dissapointed with the fuel consumption as it averaged 250 miles to a tank but the performance was very good. Id never driven a VW before so didnt have a car to compare the performance to, was slower than my Astra but i expected that.
Next up was a full Ernst GTI 8v Exhaust system with stainless steel twin pipes backbox.
I expected it to be quite loud but for some reason it wasnt?! Anyway, looked ok and only cost me a tenner!

A few weeks later my mate had a black 90-plate VW Jetta 1.6 TX in his garage, for an MOT but it failed, the bloke who owned it said it wasnt woth spending money on so i bought it off him for £20!
I only wanted the Jetta front end, until i realised the 90' spec sill extensions and wheel arches would fit aswell!!! BARGAIN!
So me and my mates dragged the Jetta back to my garage and started stripping it to a shell, saving most bits worth keeping, once the shell was scrapped i fitted the complete front end consisting of slam-panel, grill, and headlights.
Then got to work on fitting the Arches, and sill Extensions. Luckily there was no rust under original arches so i just fitted new items straight on!
I was thinking about cutting and moddifying the rear Jetta bumper to fit the golf (Jetta is longer because of boot) but thought it was easier to buy a genuine rear bumper from a show / auction.
-
Drove the car round like that until the summer (show seasons start), first show was Volksfest near Bristol, took my 1969 Porsche Empi Imp Beach buggy along and put it on the Beach Buggy stand. -Which was cool cause i didnt even enter it, just drove it in and the marshalls stuck a sticker 'show car' on the windscreen and pointed us to the show area!
At that show i bought a Genuine red rear Big Bumper, (the only genuine one they had) and some GMax -55mm lowering springs for £40
As soon as show was over i went home and lowered the car straight away!
The next morning got up bright and early, rubbed down bumper, fired up the compressor and primed / sprayed bumper...sweet!

The car went quite low (couldnt get jack out once lowered) but i wasnt that impressed. wanted it lower....
-
This is how the car stayed for the summer until winter came along and ruined everything!!!
It always goes wrong in the Winter?!
Well, i needed to replace front brake pads, so that was straight foward, then checked the rear drums...-had a leak on passenger side, so replaced the piston on the drum, then bled all brakes.
Next the car kept misfiring and not running right when warmed up, so i replaced the Ignition Module, HT Leads, Spark Plugs, and Dizzy cap. Worked fine for about a day!!!
Then back to normal again... removed crappy Pierburg Carb and overhauled it, stripped it completely and cleaned everything on it.
Once refitted, the car ran lovely so i set it up on the Crypton and all was well...
-
F*cked up AGAIN!!!!!
This time the rubber spacer had split between the Car and Inlet manifold!!
Replaced it, job done. Running lovely!
-
Christmas 2004!!! :santa:
Thought id give the car a Christmas pressy, flushed the engine, replaced Oil filter with non-genuine filter, and refilled with Castrol oil.
Proper Job!
-
January 2005!!!
Car due for an MOT :lipsrsealed:
......Throttle cable snapped on way to MOT station!!!
Got it back to my garage and replaced it with the spare Cable i saved from the Jetta!
-
Oh yeah.. the car failed!
It failed on
'near-side bottom ball joint,
near-side brake hose split,
Off-side indicator repeater not working (it was on way to MOT)
Windscreen cracked (i didnt even notice that)
-
With all these things fixed it passed the retest (thank god!)
The windscreen was done by Autoscreens and opted for a screen with a top tint (it was £70 for normal or £65 for tinted?!?!)
So now the car was starting to look sweet!
I seen loads of Jetta-fronted Mk2's lately so i was thinking about putting original front back on until i found some Audi Red paint on the shelf....
This is the result.....
-
Took a while to get used to because the red was so bright (photo doesnt do justice)... it looks ok now i think :undecided:
Sprayed an ABT badge and made a bracket to fit it on front grill so it made the car look fast and sporty!
Tinted side repeaters and front indicators to match rear tinted lights.
-
Got a bit trigger happy with gun lately.....

Had strange grinding noise from engine, thought it was Alternator but after i used my doctors style stethoscope i found it to be the Water Pump packing up.
Lucky i found problem sooner than later!
New Water pump fitted (bastid job that was) and im away!!!
-
Now it gets good... and i excel myself!
Whilst looking through Trade-it, i found a GTI 8v Power steering kit for sale, £65!
I ended up paying £50 for the pump, hoses, complete rack, subframe, and belts.
Didnt fit it for a while cause it seemed a daunting task! :undecided:
-
Summer 2005!
Loaded up the Beast with food, beer, and mates and went down south to Newquay Run to the Sun.
Whilst there some TW@T drove over my tent and nearly hit my car
So slept in the car for 2 nights! :embarassed:
Didnt take camera so didnt get any pics, sorry!
On way home following my mates in their 1.3 Beetles and 1.6 Camper it was boring doing 30mph up a hill then 55mph top speed so i had a bit of fun with a Cavalier GSI 2000, strangly i won?! He started pulling on me at 110mph!
I thought that was wierd and put it down to being a slow GSI!
Until i raced a 1.8 8v Mk2 Golf GTI... i could hear him screaming the nuts off it but i still managed to cruise past him until about 100mph then i backed off and let him past?!
I dont often race but if im bored then i will have a pop at another Golf and so far i havent been beaten by an 8v GTI?
BIZZARE!!

Look a bit wind swept!

Tryed running the car in 17's for a while with a Vauxhall fitment, looked awesome but drove horrible!!
I didnt do any Arch moddifications and the tyres scrubbed all the time, could only ever carry one passenger at a time and the price of !7 inch tyres scared me every time i heard it crunch on the back or on full lock!
So... they came off and standard 14" steelies went on for a few weeks till new tyres were sourced!
-
I finally decided to have a go at the power steering...
Was actually quite easy, just time consuming.
Firstly, used a top mounted engine crane to hold engine up, undid original subframe and steering coloumn, rack, etc. Removed subframe and fitted new subframe, rack and coloumn. I tryed to use original UJ (universal joint between steering rack and steering coloumn) but it was too short so a power steering UJ was fitted instead.
New pump was fitted along with all pipe work, pulleys, belts and bottle.

I am very very pleased with the difference the P / Steering made, except it squeals on full lock (belt slipping)...one day i will get round to tightening it up! :embarassed:
Got hold of some Compomotive Alloys 14"x 8" wide!! but they were badly curbed and damaged so i sand blasted the laquer off and took them back to bare metal, machined all the the lips so the curb damage had gone and got on with hand polishing them...
After roughly a week of evenings i had finished one wheel!!! And lost interested at the thought of 3 more to do in 3 weeks!
So they went on hold and i was given a set of rare as f^ck 15" Honda Civic wheels.
These Honda Wheels are 3 spoke (dont laugh) but a kind of split 3 spoke (6 spoke if you like) and are sprayed gun metal grey with a polished dish and lip. Sweet!
What makes them rare is the fact they were fitted 4stud to 1982 Honda Civic 1.4 Limited Edition Jap spec only!!!!!!
I will take some photos when get a chance!

Oct 2005
Had a bit of an incident involving a coffin dodger and a kerb.......
Basically he pulled out infront of me, i swerved to avoid him and hit the kerb sideways!
Damage......
Bent Wishbone (see pics below)
Rare wheel buckled, bent, cracked (left with 3 rare wheels now)
bent strut
dent in roof (think car twisted)
Bonnet lifted
(http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c317/SimonABT/randomuff022.jpg)

-
Fitted new strut and Wishbone, re-alligned bonnet, and checked underside of car for damage. Couldnt see any visible signs and car now drives fine (3 15" Alloys and 1 14" steel)!!
Not sure what to do about small dent in roof, can hardly see it!
Got all the steering re-calibrated and alligned so no other problems.
* Lesson of the week*
Always drive safely because a stupid t$at di*k head can always pull out infront of you!!! WA(KERS!!!

Ok, havent been on here for a very long time and thought id better update!!! :embarassed:
Car is now on 217,000 miles, which im pretty impressed with.
Havent done any major mods lately except the odd oil / filter change, oh... and i made a set of bonnet lifters to raise rear of bonnet.
I dont know if i like this mod so ill leave it on for a while to see what response i get.
Also sprayed my 14" steelies white, i like the black car with white wheels, gives it a motorsport feel, and i also cut down and modified a Mk3 VR6 front spoiler to fit.
-
Getting fed up of people telling me my bonnet isnt closed so am considering removing bonnet lifters! :undecided:
Also my tyres on my white steelies were a bit "ahem" illegal, so fitted a set of 15" Wolfrace Octane Alloys which were given to me with good tyres, not sure if i like them but they are better than the illegal tyres before.
I feel my car is looking a tad chavvy lately so am seriously considering a make over?!
The Engine isnt as healthy as id like, the suspension is creaking (need shocks), exhaust manifold is blowing a bit, and the bodywork is getting neglected.
Going off the Jetta front aswell, so looking around for either twin lamp front end of single.
