ok i got a central locking kit and it had two solenoids spare, so I'd like to do a boot release, but how do i make the catch revert to its original position, I've heard on here somewhere that you use elastic bands, but I'm not sure how this would be done?

i used a solenoid of an orion or something like that then used the original link on the tailgate catch but in practice it was noisy and a bit of a pain to get right. i wired it up to the rear wiper stalk (as i have no rear wiper) but i guess this isn't the case for you. the solenoid should go back to its original position when the power is off it so the catch will revert then, and obviously engage when the tailgate is shut.
now i use some heavy duty zip ties, i did this initially to try to work out the best position to make the metal rod and it worked so well i couldn't see the point in changing it to anything else. its good because you can have an amount of slack which as the solenoid throws further than the catch needs to move it doesn't lock up and is quieter....

I mounted mine inside the boot and linked it to the original rod. I doubt it would work if you didn't disconnect the original button on the boot though.
