hello i recent sold my 2.0i se honda accord juice guggler for profit so i got around 5,500 to splash on a golf
i was thinking of the 1.6se but then got told that it uses as much petrol as a 2.0gti so am now thinking of getting a 1.9se tdi
i looked on parkers guide and the mpg for tdi and gttdi is pretty similar so i dunno what to get now does anyone know how they are round town both the 1.9tdi 100 and the gttdi 130 am looking for soem thing round the 2002 mark
my main driving is round town and the occasional trip once every two weeks out of town. need something economical
pls help

1.8 T's can be very economical. You can get over 40 MPG if you drive steadily.
-
what about the 1.9 se TDi are they good round town

the 1.9 (90bhp) diesel is ridiculously economical. Even in our 110bho Audi Estate (virtually same engine) I struggle to get the long running average below 52mpg.
The old 1.6 was hopeless, I had a 2000 Bora with this engine and it was slow and thirsty - probably the same as the 2.0. The later 1.6 16v from 2001 ish is supposed to be much better. Surprisingly the 1.8t is more economical than the old 1.6 and 2.0. Having owned them all, I'd say the 1.8t is a good compromise between performance / economy. The 130 and 150 diesels are of course very good, but i just prefer the responsiveness of the petrol.

i've got a 2002 gt tdi 130 it does around 44mpg around town on motorway (sticking to 70 - 80 mph) i get around 52mpg. if i thrash it thought it drops to around 38mpg
hope this helps
:santa:

ive got a s tdi 100 bhp. Had it for a month now and it does just over 300 mile for £30 (work that out in mpg cause i cant lol). And thats driving it above average speed lets say ;)
I absolutely love it!!! Its like filling up me first micra! it just never runs out of petrol lol
-
thats pretty good going mate 300miles 30 quid!!!!
how do u rate them performance wise are they pretty nippy and how noisy are the diesal onesam thinking of getting a SE TDI 100 let me know pls
-
performance wise i raced a GTTDI at santa pod and it whooped me off the line from the pure fact that i has mountains of torque low down. After those low revs it always loses out to a petrol car.
However if i had the disposable income i would without a hesitant thought purchase a mk4 GTTDI as a work horse, they are great cars and from what i hear very reliable. This is coming from a devout mk2 owner btw.

I find that the more powerful diesels (including the new BMW 320d I drove last week) feel very quick until you actually try to drive quick. Hope that makes sense, I mean there is bags of torque in normal driving and they are every bit as good (and often better) than petrol, but i miss going though the gears and changing at 6000 rpm when i am in the mood.
It is also a very stacated drive, boost - whoosh - change gear - wait - boost - woosh - change etc.
Having said all that, you can't argue with the figures and mpg and to be fair, my decision to by a 1.8t was based on the fact that all the sim ilar aged diesels were so so expensive. We have an audi a4 with the same engine (tdi 110) and it is a great tourer, but has been expensive with lots of niggly engine management / cat convertor air sensor probs, which may have eroded our fuel savings.
At the risk of facing the wrath of the 2 litre boys, I would say you can't go far wrong with a 1.8t or tdi in anmy flavour. Just don't think you got a bargain and buy an SDI

1.8t deff they aren't bad on fuel and there very tuneable.
-
thanks guys think is i only have between 5k and 5.5k to spend so was thinkign of getting a tidy se tdi prop 100 with climate control and low mileage basically for economical value

Will certainly be an OKish car to drive, nice interior, very economical, quite swift.
However, if you like giving it some welly down the A and B roads, think u will be very disappointed. Buy it for the engine, interior, low depreciation, image etc, but not for its dynamic abilities (Ford Focus a better bet for that). The 1.8t gti isn't exactly a nimble performer, so without sports susp, i dread to think........
Best thing to do is go to your local car supermarket, where you can test drive without being bombarded by thousands of follow up calls and make your own mind up. It all depends on whether you want a fun car, or just a car for getting to A-B economically and in a bit of style.

Try an auction Ex fleet sale. SHould be plenty of 3 year old cars with no expense spared FSH. Lots to go at and keen pricing.
