Title: ABS Help on mk3 gti 8v 96P
Post by: NEILS-GTI-MK3 on 22 December 2005, 17:42
this may be a silly question, but i'm not sure weather or not i have ABS, i have the abs sign there below the airbag light, but when i looking behind this (the abs & airbag panel) there was no bulb or connection for the abs. werried?  so how do i know if i have abs or not, is there something to look at under the bonnet.
any help on this would be great.

Have a look under the bonnet, if there is a big all aluminium block with some pipes which come/go to the master cylinder, then you have ABS, if there is no other block then no.

Any chance you can supply a picture of the engine bay, I can tell you for sure then?

^ like he said. 6 pipes in/out round black thing on top. It's on the right ,at the back ,next to the coolant expansion tank.

It's also worth mentioning that some people 'fix' problems with the ABS light not going out will remove the bulb, the board it goes on, the wires, the brake pads, the discs etc etc to mask the fact it's not working right... So you might have ABS and someone might have removed all the gubbins....

that makes sense,  I noticed that the backing to the abs light only has the bulb for the airbag, and there is a silver block under the bonnet with pipes going to it, so is there a fault some where, and someone has taken the bulb out to cover the problem? also when i break hard the wheels lock up, when it shouldn't. the break pedal should gudder. any more thoughts on this please.

sounds like one of the wheel speed sensors is gone. when a fault occurs with the ABS the system shuts down so you just have non-ABS brakes. get the fault codes read and it will tell you whats wrong. going through it myself at the moment

Cheaper way to check wheel speed sensors, unplug them and check for resistance. If a sensor is f**ked, usually you won't get a reading at all.
Front sensors unplug where sensor wiring mounts on the suspension struts, for the rears lift the back seat.
