Title: New Engine For MkII GTI
Post by: Magoo on 20 December 2005, 17:22
I was wondering if any body had any experiences of putting a new engine in a MkII GTI?
Or where does a good resonably priced re-spray?
I have decided to keep my car and do it up.

I was thinking of putting a VR6 engine in. Was the 16v engine better than the 8v?
I just really want to improve the performance of the car. I am also looking to have a re-spray done, I have been quoted around £1500 for this.

If your talking performance then yes the 16v is a better engine. But dont tell any 8v owners i said that cos they get pissed!

Your price for a respray sounds about right but shop arround and you may get a better quote. ALWAYS check out their work though. Sometimes they are cheap for a reason!

Thanks for that. Can you recommend any other modifications to improve the performance and handaling ?
I am to this, I don't know a great deal about cars. I am going to do a car maitenance course so I do work myself.
I just love the MkII I was going to sell it and buy a new car, but I cant bring myself to sell it.
Are those pictures of your Golf?
Does lowering the suspension improve handaling?

8v all day long dude...........they absolutely love the REVS.

Never had 16v though, wouldn't say know.

VR6 into a MK2 is a mission and I doublt it'll be cheap because you will need to get it done properly, its not just a straightfforward transplant, you gotta do the whole lot!

have you considered doing a 2.0 bottom end?
I have just got mine back from the garage, its absolutely amazing. I decided to get head flowed and manifolds flowed to match the head,   schrick cam and a re map, spent roughly £2000
148.5 BHP and 141ft torque throttle response in much improved all in all highly recommended. having said that the tuner I spoke to said VR6 lump from Mk3 Golf is a fairly straight forward swap, apparently the engine subfame from the Mk3 fits straight onto the Mk2

oh the possabilities
