Sounds like the wheel has buckled under the weight of the car when it came off. Have you been making enemies or something. That is pretty serious, more than just a practical joke!
-
wife is going to court with her EX over the kids and he is the sort of person that would do it but cant prove it so cant say  and i have change the wheel with spare as though of that

Oh dear, not good!
Well thankfully you didnt have an accident! None the less i would inform the police.

I recon the stub axle is bent, luckily its a pretty straght-forward spanner job. It could also be the beam I guess, only way for sure is to get the wheel off & have a look at each side!
Thats a pretty mental thing to do though
-
the stub axle is what the hub nut goes on ?????

On the rear yes, once you take the rear disc/drum off you can unbolt the stub axle from the car. Dunno why I assumed the rear though, just realised you didn't mention front or back ;)
If its the front then I'd suspect the bearing housing would be bent, as well as the suspension strut possibly.

it is the rear near side so off to go and have a look now

a friend is striping a MK1 golf will the whole beam axle fill the MK2 ???
-
nope but if both your MK2 and the MK1 have drum brakes the stub axles will fit. If you have rear disc brakes only the stub axles from a MK2 or MK3 will fit.
