Anyone done this? My wife is starting to complain about driving the other love of my life. No probs on move, but parking is a bit of a struggle sometimes..... Don't really want to get rid of the car, though.
Lack of two back doors is also an issue at times with little bloke growing fast.
Maybe I should just swap for a 5dr with PAS!!!
-
Alright mate, I've just got hold of a PAS setup and will be swapping it after christmas, so i'll keep you posted.
-
maybe.... i wouldn't but then i dont have a sprog to think about thank the lord!
its do-able but just make sure you've got everything you need. they seem to go for about £150 for everything on ebay?

Lovely- thanks for that!
Joe- have to agree that this is not through choice, but apparently relationships are about compromise ........ This way I get to have a toy that she won't complain about driving!

I wouldnt worry about having a three door with no PAS. Mum and dad bought my car in 1989, when i was 3 and a bit, and we clearly managed fine with it for the next 13 years with two children, before they gave it to me.... I used to go to school in the car i now drive, talk about familiar :D Its also only a 1.3... ;) I Love it :)
-
Space is not the issue, but access for a baby seat is not the best!
Personally I am not that bothered, but my wife does not have biceps the size of mine (fortunately!), so PAS is needed for parking....
-
PAS = waste of time.... You only ever need it when you park right, which isnt a lot... And, if your a man, you dont need it then, so therefore only women need PAS, and as we all know women cant park... so it'll never get used
;)

I fitted PAS on my 5 door 1.6 driver. Looked in Trade-it for a GTI stripping for parts.
All you need is pump, pulleys, belts, and the complete subframe.
It was a bugger to fit mine as the Driver steering universal coupling is different to GTI so i had to change that aswell.
Means i got the GTI anti-roll bar aswell!
Easy to change on a GTI, just drop subframe underneath, (four bolts i think) undo hubs, then underneath dash (by pedals) undo steering column, replace with PAS subframe, attach new column, fit pump and belts and from what i remember thats about it?!
May have missed out something important in there i expect?!

Am I right in assuming that I can do all this with the engine still in, or is it an engine out job?
-
Engine in!
Use a trolley Jack to support engine when removing subframe. Its easier i found.
-
Lovely! Plan starting to come together.....
-
Actually mate, i supported engine from above, not from underneath!!!
Just spoke to my dad, you may need the PAS universal link that goes from the Steering rack to column?! :undecided:
It is slightly longer i think!
-
Yup the PAS UJ is different, and so is the rubber boot that covers it :)
-
Yeah thats right, i need a rubber boot cause i ripped it trying to fit it. :embarassed:
Didnt think it would make much difference so left it out.....The engine is noisier now inside the car rather than outside!!
-
You'll fail an MOT like that too ;)
-
Really?
Why?
-
because the UJ isn't protected by anything, a stone could flip up and jam itself in there which wouldn't be such a great thing to happen at speed ;)
-
Ah, not good!
Better get that fixed then suppose b4 MOT in Jan.
Can you fit it with UJ in place? could i just make a slit in it and slide it over into place or take UJ completely out to fit it?
-
To do it proper you'll have to take the UJ off, you could try cutting a slit in it but then you would need to stick it together somehow? I've heard of people using superglue on a split CV boot so that might do it :)
