I Have just purchased an absolutely mint golf gti 8 valve, 5 door, H reg with every old mot and service document not even a mark on the drivers seat bolster! I am lucky! But it does have one fault that the drivers front footwell and a bit behind drivers seat is damp - any ideas - The car is truly mint and never been welded, crashed or even a trolley dent - I wondered whether there were any common areas of waterleak - it definately seems more prominent in the drivers footwell and seems to seep to the back!
Cheers

Could be water entering by your bonnet pull. The water could be dripping from the bonnet, down the cord and entering the footwell? Happend to a mate of mine. You with me?
Maybe a burst heater matrix? does the heater give out heat?
Leaky sunroof?
-
defiately not the heater matrix! checked that but will check out the bonnet pull cheers! I am a total perfectionist so this will be cured! Any other ideas gti people?

I think VW's are perfectionist cars anyway :)

What a great forum! I have never been more excited to actually spend time fixing an anoying fault! fitting a performance modification is great fun because you are sure its going to make you happy! but run of the mill maintanance just doesn't do it for you normally does it!
Cheers everyone who has sent a message of help!

take off the inside door cover and see
if the membrane is split.

Busy day today! I replaced the drivers door membrane and sealed the bonnet catch gator better although it looked like new! I also cleaned all the crap in the scuttles by the ecu and by the fan and also cleaned through the sunroof tubes! hopefully this should cure the problem! notice that I have followed all you peoples lovely advice! also had a squeaky interior fan so I stripped it down cleaned it with duck oil and reasembled - and its great no squeak! Also polished and cleaned the car for 4 hours! This is what weekends should be for!
-
Did you wash the car after? Probably a good idea to pour water all over the car and see if the leak is still there. Make sure all the sealant has set first. ;)
-
Washed the car this morning seems ok but will wait for a good rain shower!
cheers for help guys/gals

D/mad - Sounds like you have a nice car there mate - being nosey can you advise roughly what you paid for it as I'm looking for exactly the same model - 8v 5dr.
If you think I'm being too nosey - fair enough - no offence taken. :)
By the way any pictures..............

It took a long time looking around the country for the exact car I wanted and I was willing to travel from lands end to john o groats for the right car! and guess what! the one turned up 9 miles from me! the car is immaculate apart from the small waterleak which I new could not be bad as there was no rust on the car on top or below - also in pacific pearlescent blue! it also had the central locking and power steering - the car was immaculate inside - even no wear on drivers seat! just been full serviced and new cambelt and 12 months ticket - the best bit.......................?800! for a 1991 h reg 1.8 gti
total bargain! well chuffed. I will put some pics to you if you send me email address!
