i've just bought a mk2 eight valve and tho i was gonna sell it 'cos i wasn't keen-it's started to grow on me, it's just begun to stall at tickover and it seems to be 'hunting' real bad, i got caught out and had to put unleaded in it-which coincided with the sh!t running, could this have caused it or is it likely to be something more sinister--also it needs a new clutch-how much should i expect to pay? thanks in advance

Maybe you have got your spark plug leads on in the wrong order.
Does anyone know in what order the HT eads go?
Mine go like this...
_________
distributor cap-> l l
l (1) (2) l
l (3) (4) l
l_________l
dodgy drawing i know.

In my experience, if you have done something out of the ordinary, or changed something - and then something else goes wrong - its usually related.
Chuck in a tank of lrp and injector cleaner and see what happens.

hi cockel
i bought this car 'cos i'd always fancied one but as far as i'm concerned it's like a trip back to the bad old days of capris and suchlike-i've never had a car with so many niggly problems--i agree with you about jap stuff
-
Same as. My car has one problem after another >:(
-
you can't buy any car thats more than 12 years old and not expect to have some 'niggly problems'
believe me i would rather have a vw with any amount of problems than a jap car!!!
-
wot niggly problems that cost hundreds of pounds? ive had lots of cars that have had probs but this car takes the piss its one after another.....that aside i quite like this little gti its growing on me.
hopefully ill get her in top condition with a little tlc.
HEY DOOB YOU CAN GET OF YA SOAP BOX NOW!!!!!!
-
well i've just sold my golf and lost money---it was the end of a dream really and i suppose problems are to be expected on an older car, i don't think my golf was a particularly bad one but i'm 41 now and i remember messing around looking for misfires on escort mexicos and capri's over twenty years ago and i just don't think gti's are deserving enough of my time and money to be doing it all over again---good riddance too
-
ILL ONLY HAVE THE GOLF FOR ABOUT 4-5 MONTHS THEN THE WIFE WILL GET IT...THATS WHY I NEED IT TO BE IN GOOD NICK SO SHE DONT KEEP WINGIN ABOUT...."OH THERES A KNOCKIN NOISE" "OH IT WONT GO INTO GEAR PROPERLY"
YOU KNOW WOMEN....
SHE USED TO MOAN THAT LOCKIN AND UNLOCKIN A MK4 ESCORT DOOR FROM THE INSIDE USED TO BREAK HER NAILS.
SO THE GOLF HAS TO BE A1 TO PREVENT ME GOING INSANE FROM HER MOANING.
