Yet another problem has cropped up with my (soon to be burnt!!) car..........Had a strange noise last week - going forward there was a kind of metallic rattling noise that seemed to be coming from the driver's side wheel. Kinda sounded like something was stuck in the wheel or something...Then when reversing I could hear a clicking noise..... :undecided:
Took it to a garage in Northampton, another different one, trying to find one that can actually do a proper job.....Anyway they got it up on a ramp moved the driver's side wheel forwards and backwards and the clicking noise could be heard - they said it was the outer CV joint. Had that done, but guess what - the noises were still there! Mechanic said that the joint that he replaced was knackered (showed me the old one but I didn't have a clue what the difference woiuld be between a knackered/good one!). Got the car back on the ramp, had a listen and said that when I can take it back in he would stick some grease in the other joint boots, which should cure the noises. Asked him if he thought it was the gearbox - he said no.................
Not convinced, took it to another garage which is where it got more worrying. They had a listen and decided that it could be the gearbox! The noise that is heard when moving the wheel backwards/forwards, with the car jacked up, does kinda sound like the car is in gear.....Got another guy under the car listening and he said it was the inner CV joint. Apparently it should move easily with the driveshaft which it is not doing.....
Apart from being sick of the piece of sh*t that is my car, just wanted some thought on whether it is the CV joint or could indeed be a gearbox problem............ :undecided:

I have the same noise on mine but cant be arsed to investigate (not loud enough yet).

if its a knocking sort of noise it could just be knackered top mounts as they can be heard when you move the wheel around looking for play in the wheel bearings.

Top mounts were both replaced a few months ago, different kinda noise now, a lot lower down.................
