I was reading the cannonball 2005 topic in Nonsense, and think this could be a good idea...seeing as some of us dont have the budget for Supercars and £3,000 entry fee..
Any suggestions for the route, when to do it, the prize anything like that?
-
London to Scotland and then back to London - Prize = entry money from each driver - party each night and mass party/dinner at the end.
-
Starting to sound cool....
-
london - wales - birmingham - liverpool - york - scotland - make it interesting.
-
Name the route il be there!
could it include ROI?
-
Sounds a good idea, How about you do every corner of the uk. Starting from somewhere like Dover in Kent, go along the sea front all the way to lands end and cornwall, then go up through wales, to liverpool then north to scotland, dunfries area on towards inverness or somewhere like that, coming back down going through york and onto birmingham, then going through norwich and suffolk finishing in london, something like that, just a suggestion.
cheers
ally

Let me see what we can do...
-
Sounds like a  idea . Ideally peeps should do the whole circuit of UK but if some couldn't they could at least meet up en-route or at overnight stop-off points.
Maybe we could raise money for a deserving charity on the way , which could also help with finding suitable stop-off places as some may look on it more favorably i.e. Police etc ( depending how big the take-up was  )
Or am I getting a little bit carried away with the idea :undecided:
-
I think if we get a route planned, ideally we would want it to last a weekend, (all around the UK looks like a weeklong event tbh..) entrance should be around £100 with half the proceeds going to charity, the other half going to the winner.
We could then send the idea to PerformanceVW or something, and whoever organizes 'proper' events like bugjam and the like.
But I'm not too sure at the mo. It will definitely be a great event i think...
-
yay! york.... cool.. who fancies pickin me up from york?
-
U got a golf int ya?
-
yeah but i ain't got £100 or the fuel to do it! and i'd deffo get lost.... first to set off (with headstart obv!) and then last to arrive, guaranteed!!!
-
yay! york.... cool.. who fancies pickin me up from york?
Didn't your parents tell you never to accept lifts from strangers  ..... As you don't get any stranger than the peeps on here !!!
-
sounds like a good idea though agree that doing a full tour of the uk may put a lot of people off ?,
on the vzi site they do a lot of fundraising and seem pretty good at organising things or pvw/golf+
or another idea is how about doing the run to the treffen/mania theres a guaranteed party at the end  and a chance to see the best european dubs :undecided:
I will see you all at the finish post :smug:
-
sounds an idea having treffen as a finish, would be quite cool going to a show, for the winner to spend their winnings....
-
calais to mania in belgium?
-
Theres a mini forum i go on, they organise a run each year for their minis leaving from london and ending at the nurbirg ring (spelling?) ring. So its 2nights (1 in a hotel on-route and 1 at the campsite) The campsite at the ring was happy to have them, gave them their own camping field and are talking about helping them sort out a beer tent for next year, and everyone who wanted it got a blast around the ring!. :)
-
I reckon we should oragnise a trip to Wolfsburg or the Nurburg Ring..........or both
-
Ok, so we are better off going to somewhre in europe either to Mania, or the birthplace* of the golf, Nurburgring. Nurburgiring would be cool, cos we can blast through some Autobahns and then go for a lap or three.
*May or may not be the birthplace, probably isn't, Wolfsburg is the likeliest place.
-
i baggsy piggin Han up!
-
I ...ahem... used to have a few Triumphs and as such came across the Club Triumph reliability run a few years ago (my old man has done it twice, my uncle a few more times), the title sounds a bit dull, but it's basically around 70 triumphs setting off from Enfield (London) on a friday night, then proceeding up the east coast to John-O-Groats, then back down the West Coast to Lands End, then back to Enfield on the Sunday - the event is quite hard work on both the drivers and the cars. Along the way the drivers stop at check points to be signed in and get a cup of tea/ shower etc, the whole thing is done in 48 hours (2000 or so miles in old cars in 48hours!) and they usually rasie a shed load of money for a charity - the event is held every other year.
On the years in between they do a 10 countries run, whcih is a similar gig - 1 weekend, lots of old cars - 10 countries... a bit more exciting perhaps, but more difficult to orgainise? ÂÂÂ
An organised trip to Mania or the ring would also be wicked though... perhaps a charity run would be something to do at a different time of the year if enough people were interested?

Sounds good to me! although your GTi's will leave me miles behind on the autobahn :p
What dates were you guys thinking of for this? Late summer/early autumn 2006 ?
-
summer ish would be a good time!
I seriously reckon we should organise a Wolfsburg/Nurburg ring trip! are they fairly near each other?
-
Chris, you gentleman, I hope you dont expect anything to happen en route with Han, do you?
I think it may be an idea to do nurburgring around the summertime '06...
nurburgring - wolfsburg = around 250 miles, i think?
-
Not too bad then considering how much driving is done before that!
Could swing by Amsterdam for a swift pint! ha ha
-
Yeah great idea.... I reckon Dinx will volunteer to organise this.........    :lipsrsealed:
-
Yeah, get someone that knows what they are doing to organise it!!
-
I am crap at organising stuff so definately get someone who knows their arse from their elbow to do it!
-

had you not noticed she's gorgeous??
-
I doubt ill be able to drive internationally due to restrictions... if you do get this going - in the first year atleast, but i may be able to volunteer my time to tag along in random dubs as a passenger recording the trip onto video :P
-
Not noticed?
Are you quite mad... Yes, I have noticed what a lovely lookin' lady Han is...
-
How about doing it on a bank holiday weekend, eg May or August and then you on the way back to London you could stop off on sunday afternoon somewhere, have a bit of a show and shine (with time to clean the car) give out some prizes, camp overnight, then head off on the bank holiday monday.
How about "The Wolfsburg Run" as a name, or better still, have a run across to Germany, "back to the factory".
If you're going to Germany, you could call it "The Bahn-stormer" (after the autobahns)
Sounds like fun. But you'd have to keep it affordable, enough to cover some decent prizes (free tune ups, an engine swap of your choice, respray, alloys, mod chips from AMD, cash prize) and all the admin too.
I don't think the police would be too keen on prizes for the fastest round trip though.
-
I think the trip to Nurburgring/wolfsburg wouldnt have an entrance fee, but the forum may be able to get some group discounts on ferries/euro tunnel and nurburgring entrance when we go?
-
Might be an idea to come up with a few routes and put it to a vote for all on the forum and then we can put up dates for 2006 - and take it from there?
-
^^^ definately!
do they do tours round wolfsburg?
-
Not noticed?
Are you quite mad... Yes, I have noticed what a lovely lookin' lady Han is...
i think we have all noticed!
-
OK, For Nurburgring, they don't publish a calendar of when they are open until February (they are booked for other sthuf like those damn german manufacturers testing) so that will be a factor in when we can do it, this is when they were open summer 2005 tho:

May 14-15
June 14-16

Not noticed?
Are you quite mad... Yes, I have noticed what a lovely lookin' lady Han is...
therefore...i feel it is my duty to escort Han and ensure she has a safe journey....
-
Then I must offer to ensure Han's friend Jess has a safe journey too...
(Don't worry Han, I haven't been stalking you....just looked at your post in projects and Jess looks FIINE!)
-
^^^ is ur nick name "Hey you there in the bushes"
-
:embarassed: No
-
just thought i would ask!
-
Anyways, One lap round the 'ring is 16 Euros, 4 laps is 56 euros, 8 laps is 108 euros and 15 laps are 195 euros.
-
plus if you wanted to you could book a ride in the Ring taxi (not a VW im afraid but a BMW M5 ) for about 170 euros; split that 3 ways and it works out pretty good
-
I think i would opt for 4 laps! but that prob take me about an hour
-
I think the four laps is the best value one, one lap is a bit pointless, at least on the fourth lap we should have an idea of the track, + we can always 'learn' the 'ring on GT4!
-
I already do cane it on the nurburg on GT4! in my zonda!
but i am sure i can fit in some more, call it extensive training!
-
chris.. ahve u got a vw again yet? cos i ain't riding in no opther crap darlin!
as for jess... she hates vw - she don't know whats good for hwer, adn she's very against me gettin a cab! shes taken too! (sorry)
as or dates, lets do 14-15th may.. i'm 20 on teh 13th may (DO NOT FORGET!)
so that would be an ideal date! cos i'll be no longer a teenager! plus i got some cool boots the other day.. i cud wear em....
-
Well then how about a nice blue valver for u to travel in! ha ha
(see my sig)
-
han... you can ride with me if you like... it'll be a VW for sure - i'll put a piccy up in the what does everybody look like bit later if you like
a good few more practice laps on GT4 will definitely be called for though I think! (will have to use the mk1 as there's no mk2  )
Rob
-
...and you can wear your new boots too

Rob
I have 3 mark 1's on GT4! and i have the equivalent Mark 5 to match them, same colour, same power to weight ratio's and same wheels (how sad am I by the way)
-
Han, From the four months I've not been a teenager, It's not all its cracked up to be...
-
I've only got the one mk1 in GT4 - it's a silver one, I wanted a mars red but couldn't be bothered to do all the VW races again to get one. Mine has the closest BBS splits I could find to mine (grey centres, polished lip) and as close to my 183bhp as possible... I thought that was quite sad!
(on GT3 I managed to build the exact same MX5 as I had - V-spec Speedline Wheels - exhaust and filter )
-
^^^ i spent hours re-doing the GTI races and doing the Msport BMW races to get more money to tweak these Golfs
I have a Silver Mark 1 and 5, a Mars Red Mark 1 and mark 5 (tornado red tho), and a Blue 1 and 5!
I was well pleased when i got the Mars Red one! have left it completely standard, ususally i shapen up the gear changes but i havent on this one
-
I think mays a good time to go, or easter, cos no one does f**k all then!
-
I am game when ever really!
-
Same here really, I just need to make sure my 8v is looking nice and tidy, which will be way b4 May...
-
well having just read all this, next year me and a few mates have already planned to do a trip to the nurburgring, possibly wolfsburg and ending up in worthersee for the massive show there....
that sounds like a good enough run with the added bonus of there being a world class event at the finish line, before heading back home that is....
-

-
Chris, if you get that driver, please take off the sundstrip!
-
why...it looks nice
in seriousness, if anyone knows of another way to contact the seller, it be VERY grateful, this is the exact sort of car i've been looking for!!
-
Only if you complement it with some Lexus Lights

When is that?
worthersee is may 24th-28th and we were thinking of going on the 17th doing the nurburgring and wolfsburg on the way...
-
^^^Sounds like a good plan if u dnt mind half the forum tagging along!
So they do tours at wolfsburg?
-
yeah there is a museum, got to be worth a look. the more the merrier i guess!
-
would be good to have that as a target date...
-
Yes! that settles it then 17th of may it is!
-
I've been trying to persuade the missus that we should go to Worthersee for a week next year, and mentioned that there might be a VW show happening at the same time...she's still thinking about it, I think it's going to be a no though! Originally she wasn't too keen on the idea of spending a whole day at the 'show'...so I quickly came back and told her that it wouldn't really be a whole day as the whole area apparently becomes one big modified VW parking lot for the duration so we'd be seeing cars just as we were walking along....that may have been the last nail in the coffin
If it happens that the missus and I don't go together I'd be really up for a road trip to Worthersee picking up whatever comes along en-route
BTW - Han...for a journey of that duration you'd be better off not riding in a Driver - we'd all be on our way home by the time you and Chris got there  - you may want to come along in a nice valver though?
-
Valver?!?!
G60power foos!
-
...oh dear no! All that hissing and shreaking would give a lady a terrible headache on such a long journey
-
....touche mr rabbit.......
-
...oh dear no! All that hissing and shreaking would give a lady a terrible headache on such a long journey
a very valid point has been made!
-
And if its any valver its a one that knows what colour it is! Yours rabbit cant decide whether its blue or black! indecesion can be costly!
-
Meh, but......***HAN*** could pretend shes driving, give her a spare wheel like
-
she? - hmmm....
get back on topic boys!
-
^^^ u brought it up to be fair!
-
Haha ohh han, decisions decisions eh? wheres dinx when you need her. :smug:
-
decisions?! aint my ball game...
bazzer..you can wrap ur lips around my exhaust until the fumes come out of ur @rse..
i'll believe this wen it happens...not including joe/si in that sentence
Dinx
-
^^ thats why we need someone to organise it!!
-
well..why dont ya ask joe..if him and his mates r organising it already, surely he wudn mind sorting it for yous..as long as ya's aint full o sh!te cos joe has mentioned doin this a few times..
Dinx
-
*Neaty gets out from behind the sofa in fear of the wrath of dinx*
I was gonna suggest that actually, seeing as though he has half organised it anyway
-
like i say,dont think he'd mind..
i wudn personally do this with my cab like..too much mileage
Dinx
-
Well i am not fussed about mileage now, seeing as tho i am never gonna get much for it when i sell it after my meeting with the side of a renault clio!
-
yeah yeah... women always suggest something! something ... that men "thought" about! :smug:
-
Dinx calais to nuerburg is only about 300miles :) ahh c'mon, wheres your sense of adventure? There'll be a nice big bar of galaxy chocolate at the end for ya :P
This wouldnt actually be that difficult to organise, if  you guys are serious about making it work i'd gladly help you sort it.
-
i was going to........honest
-
n how wud i get to calais..fly?!
nah...im sh!te at geography..it would take me waaay longer.. id buddy up with sumone..buts thats only if i fancied it nearer the time tbh..i wont bullsh!te ya..i aint gan..
Dinx
-
actually organising the run would be ok if we can decide on a date (which I think is the 17th may - yes?) - but the logistics of trying to sort out hotels for a large number of people at a number of different venues - especially as we'd be heading to Worthersee where there'd be a huge number of people looking for hotels...I'd guess booking hotels would be something that needed doing sooner rather than later. Failing that maybe camping at Worthersee as the weather is meant to be good at that time of year?
-
Well before you worry about that you need to figure out who actually wants to help organise it, Its alot of work and will take up alot of hours in your spare time - BUT - If done correctly and as a team it wont be hard.
-
If we can all settle on a date, 17th is when GTI Joe is going i think then thats a start, could start a new thread and get some names of who can drive and who will need to buddy up with some one.
To be fair i am not too bothered about sleeping, i will sleep in my car if it comes to it. But as you say tenting it is always an option
-
Well dates cant really be sorted out until nuerburgring release their dates if your planning on blasting around their circuit.
-
good thinking bat man
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d181/Neaty/batman.jpg)
-
BUT that'll mean febuary before you can set a date.. :) So maybe this year, rather than going international to nurburgring just around england, Say - starting off somewhere daan saaf travel up through the midlands (taking in all hill scenery!) through the north stopping somewhere in the lake district. Would be easier to arrange and get the run noticed in the community - and it'd mean that if its decided to do again next year the names already established so you can afford the extra few months it takes to set the date.
-
You know it has to end in cornwall, its the dogs
-
Could work that way (staying in the UK), I think all the way round might be too much, are there any race tracks in or near cornwall? I've always liked the idea of Newquay, but you know the nearest place to us without a speed limit is the Isle Of Man...
-
uk first year to get it off the ground then see how popular it is and then take it to europe! i would def be up for england but i get scared everytime i go out of the door some one is gonna mash my beloved dub  :embarassed:  (iv had way too many crshed for a bloke my age)
-
It only has no speed limit because by the time you speed up you gotta brake before u hit the sea :P
Well how about gettin some suggested routes sorted out, then sticking up a poll to see which one people prefer?
I'd suggest a variety of them based in the UK.. eg:
Edinburgh -> newcastle/sunderland -> middlesburgh -> Leeds -> Nottingham -> Donnington race track
Although that may be a pain for most people to get to the start!. So i guess it'd be best of starting in the midlands? But then you got the difficult question of finding a decent ending point... Possibly a slightly more scenic route heading starting in the midlands, heading up north via west coast to the lake district, stop the night in the lake district (Plenty of photo ops for nice cars n nice scenery!) then back down south via the east coast to the leicster to donnington race track (Or another decent track with track days!)
Another possible idea would be to start it off up north somewhere, working our way down to bugjam!.
-
-
i am not picky on the route and i live up north
-
If you are going to germany then either the "back to the factory" or "Bahn Stormer" are f**king great ideas, my eyes lit up when you said that.
As for may, it might be a bit tight for me with uni and everything. Although i do really want to go to worthersee if anyone wants to come along, although i might have to meet up with joe. But i need to find out timetables and stuff first.
Amazing idea, round the uk would be good, could do a round the coast type thing, if anyone is interested.
-
I will do either coz i fancy a bit of wolfsburg action tbh!!
-
you should start up a new topic poll for if anyone is interested in wolfburg or just the uk
-
sign me up for both
-
Yeah i jus wanna drive round with other golfs
-
^^ me 2!
-
Should be interesting seeing a huge convoy of dubs driving round the country.
-
...causing havoc!
-
It'd be great, the best...
-
Havoc? From dub drivers? Does such a thing exist?!
:undecided:
-
Well Hitler drove a dub, and we all know what happened there...
-
hmm the less said about that the better
-
Sorry, just couldnt resist it...
-
no, fair play
-
How about the old classic - Lands end to John o Groats...?
I know someone who cycled it last year  At least we'd have more fun!
-
sounds good to me mate
-
Now thats an idea!!
-
Thinking about that, it may take more than a weekend... its around 850 miles (depending on route) and appratly takes around 18 hours! Although, people could join in for only certain sections of the journey this way...? that is if they couldnt manage the whole trip
-
dont need 2 live topics about the same thing, lockified.
