Title: Fitting A Kenwood iPod Adapter In A Mk2
Post by: mookie on 13 December 2005, 21:05
Okay chappies, I'm getting one of these fellas of Santa later this month:

I intend to plug it into the rear of a new Kenwood headunit, and I would like to then set it up so I can have my iPod stored in the glove compartment. Obviously therefore the leads need to dangle down behind part of the interior.

However I have a Mk2 Golf and I've had no need to delve behind the centre console or dash since I bought it. Is there like, a big ol' cavity behind the dashboard and trim? Can I just feed the wire down from the headunit in the centre console? I've pulled the current Kenwood reciever out for a look and it seems pretty straightforward, connection wise - it's the feeding the wire into that dark abyss behind the console that scares me. I can't see any suitable holes or spaces in the glove box to allow me to store the iPod in there - I read the comment on the sticky about pulling out the centre console, but that sounds really scary for me to attempt. Is my only option to make a hole inside the glove box?

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Ok, I done this on the weekend with my alpine ipod adapter.
Unscrew three screws, two on the sides, one under the gear stick gaiter, pull the centre console towards you and twist it to the left.
If you look inside it, there is a lovely flat bit of plastic, just begging you to put it there...
Stick it down with double sided sticky pads, and if your feeling adventurous, a couple of screws. Then get a dremel, and chop out a hole in the top cubby hole of the centre console, just big enough for the cable to fit through (not the dock connector that plugs into the ipod, because everytime it slips down the hole you'll have to take the centre console out to fish it out...)
I took some pictures of it in situ, but not a picture of the back of the centre console  I'll get some pictures on Friday when I fit my central locking and sub.
I also (well my mate) fitted two 5 inch coaxial speakers in the sides of it and it looks proper cool...

So where does your iPod rest? I'd love to see these pics as I'm a bit clueless as to what I'm doing to be frank   :embarassed:  I'm not scared of the 'doing', more the 'what and where' of it all.

If you havent got leccy windows, then your centre console should have a space above the ashtray/cig lighter. Thats where I put mine, tho, if you dont smoke, the ashtray may be a good space for it...
