Title: Hello! Im new... MK4 GTI question...
Post by: ANT_1 on 12 December 2005, 16:00
Hello,

Im just looking at buying a MK golf, cant decide between the GT TDI 150 and the 1.8T... but also, ive noticed that the older ones have a two tone blue and black interior with recaro seats...?

the new ones I sat in didnt have the recaro name and we're two tone... are the ones after 2000 or so different?

if so, which one is better?

Cheers for your time

Anthony

Mine's a silver 2000 1.8 T & has black with red insert Recaro's.  I'm not 100%, but I think the Recaro's were a factory option??? :undecided:

My mates' 02 52 1.8 T has the 'normal' black/blue sport seats that I think you described above.

cloth recaros were standard on earlier 1.8T's in black/red, black/blue and black/grey. far comfier and more supportive than the 'sports' seats they replaced them with.

If your of a larger frame like myself , i find the sports seat better as the bolsters are smaller

i agree with gaz, the larger person would probably prefer the sports seats. i'm no fatty( ha ha) but my recaro's are a bit wasted on me, as i don't seem to fit. 6'2'' and big boned (overweight) and i find the bolsters a bit awkward, especially right thigh. my leg has seemed to have moved most of the foam to expose the hard shell interior. or maybe this is getting in and out. the outer cloth is still in good knick mind.

thanks for the replies guys... the one i sat in was a 2002... had black with grey check colours inserts... no recaro stitching... are these the "sports seats"?

ive found a 2000 with 53k on, and a 2002 with 65k on... are there any differences between the 2 years that would make me go for the "mechanically older one" (the 2002) over the 2000 which has done less miles?

i like the recaro branded interior... :S

the later one will have VVT and a better turbo, doesnt make much difference when standard, but will give you more poke if you h ave it remapped than an earlier turbo.

Ive just used the search function (coz i knowhow annoying old questions are from newbies) to look at the revo information...

I was planning on getting a revo remap but I dont know how insurance would react. my quote on the 2002 1.8T 150 is £829 from direct line fully comp... and i can get a civic type R with 197 BHP for 950 fully comp...

BUT all the power from the civic is high up the rev reage isnt it? so having to thrash the arse off it, but with the golf, is the power more accessible lower down?

you have a remap topher yes? what did your insurance company say. also what other companies shall i try?

all the torque kicks in low down yes, so in normal driving conditions you can spank a type r, they need a long stretch of road to get speed up.

if i remember rightly it was about an extra £250 on my premium, i delcared it as a "chip increasing power no more than 30%"

specialist companies such as greenlight, HIC, adrian flux or brentacre might give you a better quote on a modified GTI.

what company are you with mate? if you dont mind me asking?

Im 22, almost 23, with 3 years no claim, will be 4 in april.... direct line on the civic was 1100 but greenlight on the same car was 950.

direct line on the golf was 829... so i mite give greenlight another call...

they decent quotes?

Ive owned a Type R. Yeah it was super fast but like u said u do have to thrash it as the real power kicks in at 5900rpm so ur obviousley gonna be using alot of petrol. Also as much as I enjoyed my civic and blitzing 9/10 of cars they are very basic cars not luxurious and mine was leather with no aircon or sunroof. Ive now got the Gti 180 and although its not as quick I think the turbo kicks in around 2000rpm so you can save on fuel cost in that respect. Ive heard theres a superb insurance company called-  www.4youngdrivers.com  - they specialise in the more powerful cars and are supposed to be superbm even if you've had points or bn convicted. So if you got a clean slate u should be onto a winner.

on my golf 1.8T mate

im with admiral... in the end they turned out to be the best all round... even though to pay by installments costs an extra 180 odd on my policy... but if i pay the balance within 14 days i only pay the amount quoted which was £728.

and i get paid again within that 14 days so money shouldnt be a problem... just gonna have to wait on my road angel :(
