Title: Need some bass in my mk2....
Post by: takethefifth on 12 December 2005, 14:18
Hi, my first post in the ice section and hoping someone can help....

I am wanting a cheap and cheerful way to increase the bass frequencies in my car (88 mk2 gti). For ease i was going to just get a spare parcel shelf, whack some holes in it and bung in some 6x9's.

Problem is 6x9s are never very clear due to their co-axial nature so i wondered if anything would be gained by putting some dedicated midbass maybe 6" speakers on the shelf. I don't need treble in the back and have infinitys in the front that give plenty for me.

Has anyone come across this (ie. does it work!)?  Any suggestions for which speakers or sizes to get? And/or any other suggestions?

I was tempted by a front door build 'a la' dizzie but can't really be bothered to do it and to wire it in! I figure two parcel shelfs then i can just swap them when parking in dodgy areas

What about a cheap(ish) sub and amp?
I hear people say this is the best way to get good bass.
Or buy or make a stealth shelf, nothing too showy and you can put whatever speakers you want in there, make it look stock and you don't have to change shelves...

there are good midbass drivers out there but you would prob be best to get a 10"sub and amp. decent 6*9`s are ok but a sub is better:)
6.5" midbass rrp £119.99

Cheers Ross thems the sort of thing i am looking at...

I used to have two 12" subs in my old car but for this one i don't want a sub so i guess its going to be some of them monkeys in a parcel shelf.

For the parcel shelf again i could make one.... but for less than the price of the MDF i can just get one from a scrappy. I am trying to keep cost and effort down to a minimum!
