While putting the head back on my 8v i have managed to strip the threads on one of the head bolts . Any ideas as to how this can be fixed?, can they be helicoiled? or isnt that strong enuff?. My only other idea would be a 2.0 bottom end
Im starting to think this car hates me, lol.
-
Can you re-tap it?
How did you manage to strip the thread? what did you use a 2 meter breaker bar?
-
arent they studs?
-
Well im hoping it can be tapped bigger then some sort of helicoil put in, will have a ring round tomorrow.
I did it upto the correct torque then did it up 90 degrees, had a breather, started to do it the last 90 degrees and it just went, a very bad feeling!
Well it was about 1 meter breaker, err with abit of pipe on!

arent they studs?
Are you thinking of the rocker cover studs?, im on about the bolts that hold the head to the block!
-
probably, sounds like much expence and hassle :nerd:
-
why did you keep tightening after you had reached the specified torque?
try stud extractors - drill down the centre, insert stud extractor & wind out the broken bit (in theory) lol

i didnt over tighten?, tighten to 60nm then a further 180 degrees?. Stud extractors would be a good idea if i had a broken stud in ther

Yeah you're supposed to tighten to the specified torque then give all the bolts 90 degrees, then another 90 degrees ;)
Sounds like the perfect excuse for a 2.0 bottom end if you ask me
Edit: I'd get another torque wrench it sounds like yours might be out! And the correct procedure is, tighten them all to 40nm (29.5lbf ft) then to 60nm (44.3lbf ft) then 90 degrees, then another 90 degrees ;)
-
surely there is a way of replacing it  but yeah get a 2.0l anyway
is it cast with the bottom end or interfeirence fit?

Sorry I don't know what you mean?
-
hows the bolt attached to the bottom end? seperate part or part of the bottom end casting, ie if you heat up the surrounding metal could it be taken out
-
Oh I see! The head bolts screw into a thread cast into the block! Only way round it is to retap & use a larger thread really. I don't think a helicoil would be strong enough!
-
Have been onto a local engineering company that do engine rebuilds and repairs, they recon they can pop a helicoil to repair the thread for £40 which doesnt sound bad.
I have to say that im a little unsure that it would be strong enough but they seem to think it will be fine.
-
Worth a go for £40!
-
helicoil will be fine. on some hipo race motors with alloy blocks helicoils are used from new as they are stronger
-
Just to keep this thread upto date, i got the thread repaired, and all i can say is he did an awesome job on it. Dont think it was a helicoil that was used, looks like some sort of full thread insert, the heads gone back on today and they all torqued up fine, result!
