Title: Advice on damaged Golf please
Post by: growla666 on 11 December 2005, 11:58
Hi, my friend has offered me his 1 owner mk3 8v GTi Golf, P reg 45k, full VAG history 5 door for £600. The catch is that the front wing has been hit by another vehicle and has bent the front nearside wing in and the nearside front door. More worryingly is that the rear nearside door has raised above the shut line by about a cm towards the rear of the car which looks to me like the chassis my have been bent . This is why my friend is offering it to me so cheap. Aside from that the car has air con, electric roof, a years MOT and Tax on it. I'll try and post a picture later but is is worth buying or will it cost too much to repair? Your superior Golf advice would be appreciated on this. Btw does anyone know how much it costs to straighten out a chassis at a bodyshop?

i repair em for a living m8, it sounds like it's bent or twisted, my advice is offer him £250 and break it for bits, by the time you've paid to have it repaired, you mught have well have gone and bought a straight 1, plus, no matter how good it's history, it's now been in a bang......

my advice in a nutshell............leave it....

:undecided:Umm I thought as much, its just difficult to let this one go. On first look theres very little damage until you take a closer look. How much do you reckon it will be to straighten it out?

all depends on where in the country you are, but expect to pay about 150 up north to get it jigged and about 500 down south.....

Hey Hardcor,

Thanks for the advice, 500 down south...ummm ok, I live in Bucks so am looking at that kind of figure. Since my mate hasn't claimed on his insurance this car hasn't been recorded in any way so that wont be a snag either. Does the cost of a re-jig go up depending on the severity of the damage? Your advice to steer clear seems logical, but if the damage is limited are you saying there could be a whole load of other things wrong too, I mean it passed an MOT in Nov so surely anything major would have been picked up then wouldnt it?

they coyuld stick it on a jig and it be straight, could be the door hinges that are bent, hard to say without a good look round it or a few hundred pics from all angles, if it's not recorded, just stick 2 doors n a wing on it, and bang it out.....then buy a 3 door...

you will need to have posted ten times before you can see your pms though so get posting!

Id say leave it well alone. If its been in an accident you dont know what else has been affected.

my first car was an ex write off, i managed to do it properly though. Was fine but i knew and trusted the guy who repaired it. If i hadnt known who did it i wouldnt have bought it.

£600? I'd leave it for that. I've seen perfect ones going on ebay for just a bit more. Also, it doesnt matter how much MOT its got left on it -your still not driving it like that :P

yeah if you can get it cheaper it might be worth buying but no offence to anyone here but its 'only' an 8v mk3. thats not a pop at mk3's or 8v's but just that a mk3 8v is probably one of the cheapest to buy anyway. so by the time you've spent out straightening it and fixing it up you may as well just buy one thats straight in the first place.

I've got some pictures of the Golf now and it doesn't look that bad damage, I've posted on my gallery. How long does it take for them to get approved, anyone care to have a look at them???

So Gti Schmo, its not that bad so maybe it is worth a punt for 600 notes. I think other posters previously have assumed the front end is caved in and bent. when you see it in daylight its not that severe and maybe can be rectified for less than £500. Will need a new front wing, nearside front door and maybe just the rear door re-shaping. The rear door just looks like its been bent away from the frame, like somebody has tried to break into it or something. I had this on an old citroen when I got locked out. The garage bent the door out to access the door lock and then all they did thenwas literally bend the door back into shape!

yeah it doesn't look half as bad as i was expecting. i'd still try and knock him down a bit! :P get other opinions though as i'm not the best at bodywork etc and have no idea of the cost envolved.

It doesn't look as bad as i imagined

Get the wing banged out the rear door pushed back into place and you have a car you dont mind using as everyday transport knowing it'll never be perfect

On my old Cabrio when it was involved in a shunt the body shop had a long bar with markers that they measured from one corner to the opposite corner using the top wing bolts as pointers, and that gave them a rough idea on how much it was twisted in my case half inch!!!! Maybe you could try something similiar using a piece of wood with marker points? Only a thought
