Title: Golf GTI 8V Performance
Post by: Daxcossie on 09 December 2005, 09:55
I recentley purchased a Golf 8V GTI Digifant 1990 spec and was just wondering if all of the Digifant engines and Camshafts are the same.

My engine seems to pull at its hardest between 4000 and 6000 revs and below seems abit average.  There is a change in engine tone above 4000 revs (I guess its on cam above 4000 revs?)

Is there anything I can do to improve the performance lower down in the rev range as its not that easy to keep the revs up all of the time?

My old 1600 Driver was better lower down in the rev range, but would run out of puff at 4500 to 5000 I guess.

Any comments or advice would be cool.

They are indeed all the same, if your 1600 driver was better then you definitly have a problem with your engine, get the timing checked ASAP!

The car is running well and has had the timing cheched, together with a full service etc.

I forgot to mention that the driver had a full GTI exhaust and had been totaly stripped out, so I guess that would make a fair bit of difference.

So, are you saying that there is no difference in performance above 4000 revs on your car?

No I meant that all digifant engines are the same. :)
My Driver had a GTI exhaust on it, and even then theres no way my driver had more torque than my GTI does now!  Just because the timing was checked doesn't mean it was checked right ;)  Once I adjusted the timing on my Digi it became a completly different car, it can now wheelspin in 1st :D

is there any chance your car has a fast road cam in it?  as this tends to up the powerband. mine has quite a lairy one in it but still pulls like mad from the go. and has wheelspan shifting into third so i'd agree with jonny and get it checked by someone who knows the digifant engine. if the cam was only kicking in at 400 it'd probably idle quite badly too..........

Its tickover is ok from cold and warm etc.  Standard Cam fitted.  As far as I am aware the car is stock.  It will wheelspin in 1st and maybe even 2nd on occasion.

I have just seen the original engine specs showing that max torque is generated @ 4000 revs and max bhp is @ 5200,  so I guess that explains.

Maybe the 8V was designed with practicality in mind?  At low revs it can be driven without any effort and then above 4000 it presses on etc?

It should pull well in fourth from about 1.5k up, mine does.

As you said Organisys, alot more pull over 3500 revs in any gear.

mine pulls well from the word go!
If anything it runs out of puff at about 5k. i have found it best to use it around 3.5k-4.5k!

I think you just have false memories about the performance of your 1.6, it sounds perfect to me

Ok - Got home and decided to dig out the Golf manuals and as I suspected the Golf 1600 Driver's Max torque comes in @ 2500 as opposed to 4000 in the 8V GTI.

Hey ho, I suppose you cant have everything.

the 8v i got now doesnt peak at 3500, it peaks about 4800 from the graph i got.  it doesnt seem to run out of steam at all im always hitting that rev limiter it just flys up there and my old one was loosing power from 5000 on wards and by 5500 i was changing gear to get some more poke. only other thing is i can wheel spin it in changes from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd and if its wet from 3rd to 4th.  now if only it had some longer gears it be perfect but i guess ill loose that 8v pull then :S

Thats why i think ive got a GTI Cam in my Driver cause it pulls like mad at 4000rpm, and can sit on 8v gti's arses all day long?!
Also got GTI exhaust, and 1.8 Carb setup. (that made loads of difference)!
Bizzare!  :undecided:

thats pretty good going if you can keep up with an 8v in a 1.8 carb, it is down to the driver though in my old 8v i had trouble keeping up with a 1.6 carb straight line i could easily take him but the corners where a no no he was flying round and i was sliding. fielders car had trouble keeping up but slammed's didnt for same car lol i think i could take slammed now though :P suspension on the old was awful but the new ones awesome :D 60mm drop

Rain: i didnt understand that last post. Did you say that your 8v GTI had trouble keeping up with a 1.6 carb?

Makes sense though does it not?? Why put a drivers max torque so high up when it is only a 1600 and not designed to have the balls ragged off it. Gtis are designed to be thrashed.

They are strange beasts these Golfs? My 1990 digifant will not idle but it goes like stink.... what's that all about? It pulls really strongly after about 4k and zips through to the rev limiter without effort...
Just wish it would idle

Mine seems to idle at a low speed even when cold (below 1000 revs). I must admit that I think the Digifant could do with a higher idle speed when cold as it does sound as if it might stall at times.  My old 1600 Driver had had a very high tickover when cold.

The 8v GTI & 1.6 Driver should both idle at about 900rpm ;)
Title: Re: Golf GTI 8V Performance
Post by: Daxcossie on 15 December 2005, 18:18
Yes, that is correct but the driver ticks over at a much higher speed until it gets to temperature.  Where as the 8V will always sit at anything from 850 to 900, even when cold.

The driver should only rev to 1.5-2k when first started for a few seconds then settle to an idle of about 900.  If not then one of the many carb components isn't working quite right ;)
