stripped the car yesterday, and found a box behind the centre console with vdo marked on it with the number 244 any ideas

VDO votex console box maybe?? although i could be talking complete rubbish, just the only thing in VWs that rings a bell.  :huh: :huh:

If yours is a 16v then it's most probably the control unit for the idle stabilization valve  :smiley

yep its 16v, weird place to put it though!

yep it is the ISV control unit. think its kept in there as its the warmest/driest place they could think off!
