Title: Anyone replaced Rear Calipers and Handbrake Cables?
Post by: steviem on 08 December 2005, 11:27
Hi,

I bought some reconditioned Calipers and Handbrake Cables to replace my totally seized rear calipers and stretched cables.
My Mechanic friend has fitted them with the existing pads (the pads only have about 25% wear), however, the rear calipers work on the footbrake, but dont seem to apply enough pressure when using the Handbrake.
I am told the handbrake makes four clicks, but still allows the car to move
hopefully you can help me out so i dont have to buy brand new ones from Euro Car Parts

Haynes:
1 Before checking and adjusting the handbrake cables, first check the outer brake pad to caliper clearance.
2 Fully release the handbrake lever then tighten the cable adjuster nut under the handbrake lever surround trim to the point where the caliper lever just separates from its stop (see illustration). An assistant is useful here to ensure that as the nut is tightened, the lever-to-stop clearance does not exceed 1.0 mm. Tighten the locknut then fully release the handbrake and check that the roadwheel rotates freely, then apply the handbrake and check that the roadwheel is locked.
3 Repeat the procedure on the other side.

Ah, Cheers, methinks buying a Haynes manual is in order...

cables are easy. just unhook them from inside the car and they pull out from under the car. then unhook them from the caliper.

The cable might be longer than the old one so make sure u secure it well or it could rub on the tyre

The caliper bolts will be a pain to undo. Worth buying new ones.
If you have trouble then use a smaller splined socket and bash it over the bolt. This should be strong enough to undo the bolt if you have rounded it. tip of the week
