I need to remove the wings to get my tracking done on saturday. is it safe to drive without a front bumper on?
-
Ive heard mixed opinions on this one. Some people say no because its keeps the chasis together but i can see no evidence of this. Personally i would say yes its safe. Probably not legal though.

On the mk2 the 4 bolts that secure the bumper are also securing the front cross member therefore the front engine mount . There are 2x8mm bolts that still secure it when you remove the bumper but I personally wouldn't risk driving it like that .
The only way you could is to remove the 2 bumper brackets from the main bumper and refit them so that can refit the 4 bolts .
But make sure there are no jagged edges exposed and that you have all your indicators and numberplate as Mr Plod may not be too happy if you get stopped.

if you decide to drive without the bumper. Just put the 17mm bolts back in.
not legal thou

Dizzie will need to use the bumper brackets as they have the captive nuts where the bolts screw in to
P.S. Bythe way Dizzie why do need to take the wings of to get the geometry done??

My thoughts exactly, seems extreme.
Also have the front wings been off before? If not VAG use a ton of sealant along the trailing edge that makes getting the wings off intact a right pain.

i thought some places had the equipment that doesnt need to go over the top of the wheels...sure theres one round here :undecided:
-
you can do it yourself with a piece of string and level ground :nerd:
wing off job is a new one to me
-
cos everyone I goto says they can't do my car cos it's too low!
If I take the wings off the front they can't say that.
I need to work out a way to drive with the wings on and then remove them in minutes when I get there. Likely to be held on with 2 bolts. If I can still do it with the bumper attached I'll do that. I think I can!

Ahh ,I see your prob :undecided:
How about making a fibreglass or even a carbon fibre flip front like they do with minis etc
-
isnt one of the mounts for the front bumper an engine mount aswell? or have i just made that up?

100% correct.
seems funny that they won't/cant do your car dizzie? mines been done and its a fair bit lower than yours?

must be different kit for different places. everywhere I've been round here says it's too low. I'll just bolt the wing on with 1 bolt on the top and then slot it in with the bumper. hopefully it'll hold together. then I can just undo the 1 bolt and slide it out from the runners on the bumper. I won't be doing over 30 mph anyway.
cheers

dunno if your anywhere near farnham, theres a place called merrows tyres (think its called that) that can do low cars
-
Veedub, I believe Dizzie is in Wales so a bit of a treck
Also are you talking about the tyre place by the train station? If so my dad rates them as well

so is my caddy legal and safe ?,
its a mk1 caddy that has been debumpered on the front ,do i have to have a bumper ? and is the bolt situation the same on the mk1?

No you don't, mk1 bumpers are mounted differently and the engine mountings are different also .
As long as you've got indicators and numberplate fitted and no sharp/jagged edges you'll be fine
