Title: engine swaps
Post by: vee_arr_sicks on 06 December 2005, 20:44
i know its just another stupid question. but I thought this would be the best place to get constructive critisism. what kind of possibility would there be of putting an RS4/6 engine in a rallye? besides cost.
and does anyone know of any 4wd mk3 jettas? or conversions.
thanks

Anything is possible. But it certainly wont be easy. You would probably have to cut away the origional chassis and subframe and weld your own space saving tubular frame in.

theres a mk3 syncro but never heard of a jetta syncro ??,
rs4 in to rallye sounds like a nightmare would mean changing everything but would be amazing if it was done

I'm thinking the weight of the lump would be a problem also!

The Mk3 probably had a Jetta syncro version in the US, but I don't think I've seen one over here.

Converting a front wheel drive car to 4wheel drive will mean that you have to cut the chassis to fit the drive shaft to the rear.

You'd probably have to do something special to mate an RS4 engine to the running gear in a Rallye, finding a gear box to take the engine's power and fit in the engine bay along with that big engine my be difficult.

Would the running gear from an Audi S3 Quattro fit a Mk3 Golf/Jetta ?

It certainly wouldnt be easy. But then again making a tvr golf wasnt but someone did it. I am sure that if you wanted to mount the engine normally (not transversly like a VR6) then you might have to move the dashboard back to accomodate the engine etc. There is ways of doing things but it means you have to buthcer your car in order to accomodate.

I have seen a rover v8 in a mark 1 escort before, was probable a pig of a job but it can be done.

me thinks its best to buy an RS4/6 or just an R32 tuned by HPA.
but then again it wouldnt be so unique?

Dont cut a rallye! i still have an S4 engine in my garage if your interested, on the grounds that you dont do anything stupid like destroy one of the rarest cars around!

But as time goes on there's more and more Rallye's getting different engines put in them so as long as the look of the car itself is not changed too much, then its soul is still there in my opinion.

My uncle built 2 of them...awesome motors...

As for the rs4 into a rallye...that sounds like a completely different story...would def be a big achievement to do it and stop the 4-wheel drive from tearing itself apart

^^^ yea i am with you on that, things like Rallye's they are great to put highly fettled 20vt in but too many people are doing it, it would be nice to see some original rallye's in mint condition imo

maybe off the subject slightly but did all rallyes come with the G60 engine?
or were there only a select few rallyes with G60's?
I know that there was a fwd golf with a G60- was it a GTi? or called something else?

Yea thats right they have the 1.8 8valve Gti G60 engine (160bhp) and i think that goes for all of them.

They used to make just the G60 which was front wheel drive but that was with out the wide wings etc.

I'm guessing you'd have to mount the engine front to back instead of left to right. that means making way for the gearbox under the car aswell as fabricating mounts and likely modification to the susspension setup, etc.

massive job to do.
