Title: 1.8T only firing on 3 cylinders
Post by: richandhazel on 06 December 2005, 12:51
My mate has just popped round. His X plate 1.8T is only firing on 3 cylinders and the engine management light has come on. I pulled the plugs and No.1 appears to be the one not firing, it was a much darker colour than the other plugs and appeared wet, so presumeably unburnt fuel.

We're going to change the plugs tomorrow but I'm worried it may in fact be the coil pack. Is there any way to test them? Any other ideas?

TIA

just swap it over with one of the other packs, see if its still missing on the same cylinder.

Is it safe to disconnect the coil pack whist the engine is running?

You should never change the old school HT leads with the engine running, so I wouldn't risk it with these, TBH.

Better to be safe.....

Ok, swapped the coil packs over with No.2 cylinder and drove to Autocavan/GSF at Farnham. Whilst Sam bought some new plugs I pulled the old ones and sure enough, No. 2 was now wet so we had transferred the problem.

£25 lighter and a replacement coil pack all now fixed..........he's a happy bunny
