Hmmmm, not too sure about that huge Kiddie-Catcher on the front.
I've seen too many ARSE - S Escorts, and Supa-Novas with it on.
I think they have taken the look and made it too naff

dunno, i think it will grow on people, and if its an optional extra from vw it wont be pants, but i know what your saying adam! washing up bottles and egg boxes and sticky tape, a few 'boy racers' in skeggy have em on, and for some reason they are all in grey primer!

Ah, yes, Skeggy! popped through a couple of times in the summer, Fish and chips by the roundabout, watching the ford clitoris and peugeot one'o'd1cks doing circuits. Why dont they get out on the country roads, there is some great back lane thrashing to be had out there - or maybe the blue-tac and PRICK-stick isn't up to taking it past 15mph
Now cruising through the town with my top off straight to a seafront parking spot - the epitamy of east-coast cool british style, ;D

Perhaps - But I don't agree about the mk4 chap.

I like the 3dr mk4 because it was instantly recognisble as a descendent of the mk1 (with the obvious mk3 dimensions) - the C post was a work of automotive art - the 5dr didn't capture the eyes when viewed in profile as much)

This new 'car' (not a golf) is just to similar to the new SEAT they (VAG) are  parading at the moment - the Audi A3 has matured, so why the step back with the mk5 Golf?

And that bodykit does it no favours.

IT may be a grower - but only so much as mould grows on a lump of old cheese.

IMHO

I think it looks quite cool... yes a bit Corsa-esque and for a new car its an old design.

.....But its a start...

quite simply - STYLING BY HALFORDS

That's all it is - go driving around Les Smith's covered in glue and this is what your car would end up like.

That is a better picture of it, granted. But - it still looks undistinguishable from most other euro-boxes on the market. Unless VW can do something extraordinary with the engine, they may be relying on the image that the MK1 and 2 still conjour up, for the last time.

Lets just hope it goes like a proper GTi not just some luxury posser. Body kit or no if the new GTi drives like a bag of spanners the line ends here. Cross your fingers. (it will never be as stylish as a Mk1 and never match a Mk2 anyway)

Well, all the signs point in the right direction - the 'standard' MkV Golf (ie non-GTi) is apparently much more dynamically capable than the comparable MkIV, so a breathed upon GTi should be impressive.

I don't think that the initial launch car (200bhp 2l fi turbo lump) will be some sort of record breaking rocket sled, as VW are now inherently heavy cars.

As much as people say they'd like it, we're never going to hark back to the days of the MkI and II - modern cars now have to conform to a much higher crash standards, dictating stronger (and therefore heavier) cars. VW have built a reputation on quality, and their customer base demands modern 'luxuries' such as air con, loads of sound deadening, esp, abs, power steering etc etc. which all add to the weight.

If VW wanted to, they could create a MkV that goes and handles like a MkII, but in order to do so they would need to strip the thing bare!! And that wouldn't be economically viable, as modern cars without climate control, abs, traction, power steering etc etc don't sell to the mass markets, only the hardcore minority.

I'm sure most of you would have seen the stripped out BMW 3 series thats gone into production - thats is a rocket, and all the goodies have been done away with so as to lose weight. Why cant VW do the same and produce a specialist Golf that is of minimal weight and creature comforts, but perfoms like a proper hot hatch should. - The market is out there for these specialist cars, or BMW wouldnt have built theirs.

I assume you're talking about the M3CSL?

That is a stripped out, tuned version of the M3 coupe, but it also features different materials for some of its body panels (carbon fibre roof for example) to achieve a lower weight.

This is an interesting exampe, because by buiding this car BMW has been able to undercut the pricing of its rivals, as this is pitched against GT3 porsche's and even the 360 Challenge Stradale, not just the M3 brigade.

VW wouldn't consider messing with the recipe for the current Golf GTi, so a stripped out version would have to be sold side-by-side to the standard car, as you suggested.

If less (equipment and weight) means more (money, as it does in the case of the BMW, its ?10k more than a standard M3) then what would the rivals to this stripped out GTi be?

The performance gains of the weight loss wouldn't be sufficient to move it into a different 'league' of cars, so it would be an (admittedly more capable) but horrendously expensive alternative to the rest of the hot hatches available.

Only if it were cheaper would it work, and the current fashion for manufacturers is to add more cost when stripping weight.

I'd have one though ;)

One other point - people always slate the later generation of Golf GTi's for being saggy and overweight, but isn't that the case for a lot of the cars that have lineage into the 80's?

Using the M3 as an example, how different is the current generation M3 to the first incarnation? Its gained weight and is considerably less 'sharp' than the initial model. Its had to have 2 cylinders and 1000cc added to the recipe in order to keep pace. The next generation will be using a V8 of minimum capacity 4 litres.

Its not really fair to single out VW as the only manufacturer guilty of this 'watering down' as I said before, safety regulations at the time and consumer demands of standard equipment drive the final product design.

No doubt in 20 years we'll be looking at the Mk10 Golf saying, "What have they done, thisi is pants compared to the Mk 5"

U could say the same about the Vauxhall Astra and the Ford Escort ... they all got heavier and fatter.
