Title: Moister than moist! please help!
Post by: acko on 04 December 2005, 15:55
Not me, my carpets!

I've had a 'steamy' car for a while now but now its just getting ridiculous. My carpets on the dirvers side and the passenger side, mainly the passenger side have been slightly moist to the touch for a while now. On the passengers side the other day though there was litteraly a puddle! you could see standing water on top of my carpets. The carpets at the back are fine. The doorcards are dry as a bone as I replaced the membranes over summer with some homemade ones so the waters not getting in from there. Has anyone got any ideas as to where this waters coming from? its making driving a mare because my car is so 'humid' my windows fog up instantly.

Is this a common problem?

Any ideas as to what it could be are greatly appreciated as ever,

Cheers, Acko

check the scuttle area under the bonnet, there are drain holes either side which if blocked allow water to back up and leak into the cabin.  Its also worth checking under the carpet for missing bungs in the floorpan!

Yep had that problem, was my heater matrix.   Also as jonny says water can back up under the scuttle tray and get in through the heater air intake.

Sounds like you'll be learning how to fit a Matrix very soon

But the good news is there's excellent posts on here to help

And as Rowlers said its seats, carpets and wadding out, otherwise it stinks + may rust your floor pan

have you got a sunroof?
i have the same problem in the same places, my golf is always misted up- a right old mare given the freeze last week

mine leaks at the back edge of the sunroof, i watched it the other day dripping onto and between the seats!
although there are drains at the front corners of the sunroof (have checked these but they are clear) i think the rear space fills up with water and then pours over the rear edge of the sunroof as the crappy rubber/felt seal is knackered.
did the heater matrix last week so it has a brand new foam bulkhead bung too- i can see how they would leak though!

its the only thing ruining my gti, love the sunroof in the summer, curse it in the winter...

mk2litre16v: there are drians in the rear of the sunroof area too, you might want to check these over too, the felt seal isn't designed to be watertight, just enough to stop most of the water getting in :)

As usual guys, spot on with the advice, Checked my scutle tray and it was like a mini windemere in there! scooped handfulls of black sludge out of there and the water drained away. Problem is my carpets are still wetter than an otters pocket! I'll have to dry em out somehow, maybe a space heater? its gona have to wait till I go home fro chrimbo from uni coz I aint got no tools or facilities down here in the sunny midlands. Hoping against hope it aint the matrix because I seem to remember this being expensive, and a bit of a b*tch to replace?

Any ideas on how to dry the carpets be great. Left my soggy football boots in the car and my carpet is damp.

TBH, just check my street and 85% of the cars have badly misted windows with water drop lets inside. Dads Merc, neighbours rover and even a tidy BMW. Think its just the weather!

To reduce the condensation once you have located the leaks and to help keep the carpets and windows dry get down to your local B&Q or Focus/Homebase/Wickes. You can buy condensation traps in various sizes. They contain silica chips or granules which absorb the moisture. Once full of water they can be dried out in a domestic oven. Solves the problem of misted up windows easily and cheaply but only once you've tracked and cured the leak.

Also: check the door alignment (especially important on cars that have four doors and have been used for towing, the rear doors often lose the original setting over time). Try adusting the striker pin in the body frame (always mark the original position first with a pencil line around it). From memory all you need is a 15mm spanner to loosen the pin (one complete turn is enough). Get the door closing so that it is nice and tight with the body.
