Title: Fix it or scrap it?
Post by: richandhazel on 04 December 2005, 15:30
Ok, got the car cheap as you well know. Now undecided whether to proceed or not. This is the car:-

And having had a good look around the car decided to tackle the potentially worse issue, rust. This is the worst that I have found, the rest I have caught in time:-

NS rear subframe area:-

OS rear subframe area, for camparison, caught this in time, doesn't need welding:-

Car now only owes me £200 so I could easily recover that by scrapping it.........opinions would be well valued as I'm really undecided on this :undecided:

By the way, I do have a MIG welder and can weld...........but HATE doing it with avengeance

But if needs must :undecided:

Looks really clean apart from the damage, looks like some idiot has jacked it up wrong without protecting the underseal with a pad or some wood

If it was me I'd consider getting it welded, especially if I had the tools & skills to do it meself!
Title: Re: Fix it or scrap it?
Post by: Neaty on 04 December 2005, 17:09
if it meant getting it done by someone then i wouldnt bother but seeing as though u can weld and have all the gear i would do it.
Title: Re: Fix it or scrap it?
Post by: sellers on 04 December 2005, 17:20
hey rich, dont be so lazy lol

it looks pretty mint from the outside, i'd get it welded and either keep it or get it in autotrader for a good price
Title: Re: Fix it or scrap it?
Post by: ...joe on 04 December 2005, 17:23
weld it up. like the others have said the outside is too good to scrap...............
Title: Re: Fix it or scrap it?
Post by: dubslug on 04 December 2005, 18:31

Title: Re: Fix it or scrap it?
Post by: richandhazel on 04 December 2005, 19:03
TBH I like the way popular opinion is going .............damn I'm going to have to get cold and wet welding in the winter

I'll probably drop the rear subframe tomorrow for a better assesement and to make sure there aren't any other problems hiding away.

Being honest Rich,  i'm surprised you bought the car with problems like that.
No.1 rule good body essential, any other repairs no problem.
I'm not keen on welding rust damage, but if you reckon you can sort yourself then go for it. Personally i would never have bought the car in the first place.
Sorry if it isn't what you want to hear
Title: Re: Fix it or scrap it?

I couldn't agree more mate. It was dark and chucking it down with rain when I went to look at it and I didn't really fancy crawling under it in those conditions. What I decided at the time was that it was cheap enough to recover the cost in parts should I find problems like this.

Had a bad night at work last night and didn't get to bed until 6am this morning so I'm postponing any further work until tomorrow and getting some chores done today.

Decided my axle stands don't extend high enough so just treated myself to some 2ft 6 tonne ones

Post by: AudiA8Quattro on 05 December 2005, 18:16
Scrap it mate, thats a very critical area to be weakened by rust.
I wouldn't be happy with any of my family running round in a car like that   :undecided:
Title: Re: Fix it or scrap it?
Post by: richandhazel on 05 December 2005, 19:12
Going to have another look at it tomorrow.......access just how important that area is. Judging by those pictures and what I have looked at so far, it does look very important and therefore I agree. Possibly time to cut my losses.............especially as it appears I have now picked up another 1.3 Polo today for free

Sounds like its an older square back but its had one owner from new and has only done 60K!

Title: Re: Fix it or scrap it?
Post by: AudiA8Quattro on 05 December 2005, 20:22
The rust is on the section that mounts the rear axle, can't get more serious than that.
If you are going to weld that you will need to drop the fuel tank off, too much hassle
Wouldn't Hazel be happy with a polo?, they are cracking little motors.
Where the f**k do you get these cars from?
Title: Re: Fix it or scrap it?
Post by: AudiA8Quattro on 05 December 2005, 20:24
I can't believe that everyone has voted to weld it, doesn't anyone realise how critical that section is?
Title: Re: Fix it or scrap it?
Post by: richandhazel on 05 December 2005, 20:29
Just a thought that has crossed my mind...........is anyone here interested in taking it on? Spares or repair. TBH, I really don't have the time.

Its cost me £200 so far, so make me an offer, obviously less than that, and drive it away.........very strong engine, drives very well.
Title: Re: Fix it or scrap it?
Post by: AudiA8Quattro on 05 December 2005, 20:31
Drives really well, a bit wobbly handling on the back end

Scrap the car man - that is too much rust for my liking on the underneath of the car. Sell it for parts Rich and get another one :)

Post by: richandhazel on 06 December 2005, 00:27
Shame really, goes against my principal but I just haven't got the time, or the will, to sort it out. I'd rather pour my efforts into the mk1, which, quite frankly, is in much better shape :lipsrsealed:

So..........looks like its off to the scrappy tomorrow

Title: Re: Fix it or scrap it?
Post by: richandhazel on 06 December 2005, 10:24
Right I've slept on it, not literally lol, and I'm going to re-assess this morning. I've welded up a lot worse in the past and its not going to cost me anything other than time to give it a go............
Title: Re: Fix it or scrap it?
Post by: GTI EDITION (aka LTD) on 06 December 2005, 10:41
SACRILEGE !!!! The car looks far too good ( judging from the pictures) to scrap ! IMO . As long as all the rot is cut out and it's welded properly it will be as good as new  ( or even better/stronger if you use thicker metal )

I always think it a shame when I see Golfs and other V'Dubs in breakers yards as often when I've looked around them they are often still in serviceable condition, if only someone was willing to spend a little time an effort on them . The trouble is that some people panic thinking their cars had it just because it requires a bit of welding.

( P.S. Just be carefull of the fuel lines  :nerd: )
Title: Re: Fix it or scrap it?
Post by: richandhazel on 06 December 2005, 10:45
Spot on, if welded properly (which it will be ), it should be stronger than original.

Looks like I'm going to be dropping the subframe and fuel tank and dusting off the welder. Pictures to follow.........

Better get off this thing and get my a**e in gear

The latest: subframe and tail pipe now removed so good access. Have chiseled out the worst of the damage, now about to attack with a tool that I have just bought: wire cup in an angle grinder.

Pics just taken, prior to attacking with the angle grinder:-
