you've just passed yoour test? how old are you? i'm 19 and with 2 yrs ncb at crimbo and my renewal for the 1.6 driver iss about £300 for the car as standard! with 1yr no claims, i got insured at for £650  ... you deffo need to think insurance befofre you buy the car.. as a 1.6 may be as much as a gti once you've finished/start modding!?

Good luck either way! mk2 is a good choice of car!

sounds like a plan, you might want to look out for a guy on here called "sellers" who's trying to sort out win carbs for his so he might be of use. the lightweight thing can definately help you out to even out the power to weight ratio.

p.s. they're called g60 arches ;)

get a driver 1.6 so many more modding options, iv got a piper cam weber carb, and full system exhaust with 4into1 manifold, and it aint slow by any means not quite a gti yet lol

wil be even quicker when i get a 1.8 gti engine in it, gonna put it on my carb.

if you cant get a gti for insurance reasons then why not work on the handling, coilovers, strut brace etc.

well im a guy 19 2yrs ncb with a 1.3 on weber carb with mods and insurance is £600, double hannahs! so if your goin for the 1.6 id go 4 a sex change too, will work out cheaper in long run.

Twin webers are going to drain your wallet for fuel money but as you say the sound is awesome. Maybe just use one twin weber and a cam for now. And someone mentioned to  e when i was thinking about fettling with my driver, to use a gti manifold and down pipe

i agree, twin webers sound phat, i also think sod the petrol, you'll realise where ur money is goin when your croozin thru town. after some consideration i opted against the sex change too. get the 1.3 on webers.... u no it makes sense!

21 1NCB on a 1.8 GTI with 2 convictions £1200 works out 99.50 a month which is hardly anything?

Everyone seems to want to pay £300 a year for insurance ;)

Anyway, i deffo go with the 1.6. In 4-6 weeks of having the 1.3 you will soon be sick of the lack of ompth, with the 1.6 you can do quite a few things and put a supprising smile on your face!

 Things like

Twin 40's
GTI Cam
GTI exhaust system

Should give you some tidy ponies :D

i used to have a 1300 ryder, good solid car but frick me it was slow, it hummed nicely with a gti exhaust system tho

ive just turned 20 with 1 years no claims and for the next 9 month period im paying 500 for a 1600 with a weber, alloys, lowerd, 90 spec kit(excluding big bumpers) and a scorpion backbox, not bad, easliy my favorate car yet,(the 7th this year :undecided:)

ive got a gti cam in my box of left overs, is it actually worth putting it in?

Get a 1.6 Driver, at least then you get mod cons. I got a 5dr with Power steering, electric windows front and rear, central locking, ive put GTI bodykit on and fettled with engine a bit.
Just as quick as an 8v GTI (apart from top end speeds).
Paying £460 tpft with Tesco. Im 23 with no discount!

emo should get insurance quote on a 1.3 and 1.6 and base the decision on that, coz it seems 2 me everyones insurance is fairly different and u dont wanna buy a ride u cant insure.
