Post by: DANgti8 on 03 December 2005, 14:49
hi all I have an 8v gti N reg. I just brought a secondhand ecu for it (exactly the same part number)  as mine is playing up.
part no 037 906 025 H. Could anyone tell me what has to be done when you change the ecu and does anyone know of anybody in the brighton area that can do it ,  thanks guys  DAN

I'm not sure but I think you have to change the ignition switch and the keys and stuff, all to do with the immobiliser. SOMEONE must have done it on this forum! Failing that mate, try clubgti.co.uk or vwvortex.com

DAN,

I have carried out this as I was having trouble reading settings through VAG-COM.
Its a simple process but you need VAG-COM or alternate, as you have to re program the ECU to the engine.
As for as changing the the lock barrel or immobiliser, you simply recode it to the new ECU. As when you change it without VAG-COM, the car will not start.
Just make sure you get the same part number matched to your engine code.
If you want let me know your Golf year + engine code and I'll see if you have the correct part number for the ECU.

On mk3's you should just be able to do a straight swap without vag com, not sure about later models and mk4's.

Considering my new ECU was from a 'P' plate golf gti, I think it was set to the immobiliser of that key and barrel, which had to be reset.
Forgotten the error code, but engine started and would just cut out 1 second later.
