hi all, my Mk2 Golf is on her last legs and so battered bless her thats shes a wee bit of an embarrassment to me...so im thinking of replacing her with a mk3 gti.
Now...i have found what to me is an almost perfect 8v Gti....its Green id prefer Black but heh...its a P reg i want a later model one and its got 71k on the clock. However there is a problem it makes a knocking sound whilst in reverse gear....
Now does that sound like a death trap and money trap? or a sunday afternoon with a spanner?
Cheers All!

If its only when in reverse then its a box problem. So NO not a quick spanner job!
That will be a box out and possible fix or a new box!
Depends how bad a knock it is and does it slip out? You may be able to live with it depending on the price of the car.
Personally I would look for something else and a 16v.
-
Well its priced at £1500 which is basically my budget....i wanted a 16v but my budget is not fantastic to find one not thrashed and with low mileage.
How much does the cost of a new gear box cost with fitting? are we talking like 200 quid?
-
Yea if you can get one from a scappy and fit it yerself!
A cheap garage it will cost 400 plus
-
ouch....
So thats on the way to 1900 quid.
mmm i'll keep hunting then....
-
scrappy prices are well cheap though
-
It looks an expensive operation...
There has to be a cheap non thrashed mk3 out there with my name on...

Higher mileage and slightly over budget, but check here --> http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=29979.0 Well in budget but white and five doors. --> http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=30714.from0#new
The upshot off this is that there are cars out there that will fit into your budget that will not having knocking noises on the gearbox.
Check out autotrader, there'll be loads on there too and you may even get a good deal as people will want to sell before Christmas.
