Title: Subwoofer in a mkV with RCD500
Post by: hifipatrik on 01 December 2005, 22:42
I have a mkV GTI with the upgraded soundoption RCD500 with integrated CD changer. I am now planning to install a subwoofer in the boot and  are looking for some   hints and tips....I don't want to break too much in the process of installing

1. Does any one know if there is low level output on the headunit ?
2. Anyone that have instructions for how to remove the headunit ?
3. Anyone have intructions or tips on how to "unstrip" the interior for the power and signal cables ?

Any other useful tips anyone might have is highly appreciated !

Thanks / Patrik

Patrik,

The standard Delta head unit does not have RCA outputs. After searching the internet, located a company that supplies adaptors -
http://www.bluespot.co.uk/stock/preamp.asp - I purchased the adaptor, however when I removed the head unit, I found that there is no provision on the head unit for installing the RCA adaptor (or any other adaptor!!).

As I am not keen to replace the factory head unit, I managed to locate the a suitable DSP specifically designed for installing on OEM head units. The inputs are taken from the Speaker Level Outputs from the Head Unit and the unit provides RCA outputs. Additionally the unit has an auxilliary input should you wish to install an IPOD, MD Player, etc. This unit is manufactured by JL Audio:-

The factory unit does not have provision for a "Remote output", however the "Cleansweep" will detect when no input signal is present and automatically shut down your amplifiers after approx. two minutes.

I now have the following installed:-
Factory Fitted 10 speaker RCD300 Head Unit & CD Changer,
2 x Pioneer TSW-121SPL's (2000W each),
2 x Pioneer GM-510M Amplifiers (1000W each),
1 x JL Audio Cleansweep DSP

The problem I now face is when I removed the Head Unit, I disconnected the "Airbag" Light in order to remove the dash. Since fitting the head unit back (and reconnecting the lamp), the Airbag light remains on permanently.  Has anyone faced a similar problem?

I would therefore recommend that you disconnect the battery before removing the dash!!!

Thanks,
David

Patrick,

I believe that the RCD500 does have RCA outputs as standard!

Cheers

Thanks for the reply !

How did you remove the headunit ?  Is there any "hooks" that can be used to push on any release pins or so ?
Or did you have to remove the whole dash ?  If so, any other hints or tips on how to do that ?

How have you drawn the powercable from the battery back to amplifier ?

A lot of questions    But when I get started I wont stop until its done, so if I'm not prepared I will end up breaking something in frustration.....happened before  :embarassed:
