Title: Fog Lights - Good Wiring Diagrams
Post by: mk28vpb91 on 04 November 2003, 13:17
Hello, new to this list and to Golfs. I have just bought myself a Golf Mk2 8v GTI (1991) to use while I am resurecting my Mini 1000. Having driven a few miles in the Golf and done a little work (renewed the timing belt and drive belts) I must admit that it might be hard to get back to the Mini project.

Other than a badly adjusted throttle cable (had spent a few miles wondering why people made such a fuss about GTIs until I found that problem) the only other problems I have now is a faulty Cobra Alarm System, No Central Locking or Interior Lights (suspect that these are related to the Alarm) and the Front Fog Lights don't work.

The bulbs in the Fogs are OK and there is a good earth connection. The rear fog works on the second detent.

When I removed the foglight switch from the Fascia I found a Scotchlock connector (horrible things which always lead to trouble in my experience) connecting the feed wire (grey colour) to the dash illumination bulb and the output (white/yellow to the fogs). The white yellow wire had been cut through. I can't think why anyone would do this. I think it would make the fogs come on with the dash illumination which makes some sense until the little bulb blows under the strain of the current required.

What I really wanted to know was where I can find a good wiring diagram so I can check the electrics out properly. I don't want to just reconnect the wires and end up blowing all the electrics. The ones in the Haynes manual don't cover GTI models thoroughly and seem to be incomplete. Are there better manuals out there?

Can anyone tell me which of the relays is for the Front Fogs on a '91 8v GTI? Haynes says number seven but there is nothing in that slot on my car.

Thanks,

Max

I'm still interested but don't worry too much about posting them soon. This weekend is dedicated to an oil change and replacing the accelerator cable (hopefully won't take up too much time).

Ok, I'll look them up and make sure I've got what you're after (90% certain that I have) and if that is the case, post them over the weekend.
Lets hope the weather holds out for a good weekend.

I've had trouble finding the relevant diagrams, however, I have found some fusebox/relay information that may help you:-

Just going to have another look for some wiring diagrams...........

How you getting on in your quest? get a bentley manual, the wiring digrams in them are well helpful.

I have heard good things about the Bentley manual. My dad has got one for their Beetle convertible that was imported from the states and it looks thicker and more concise that the Haynes manuals which seem to have less and less information in them as time goes on.

One of the reviews I read on Amazon.co.uk said that it was clear that the manuals were written for US spec vehicles. Are they still worth paying out for? The Haynes wiring diagrams are at best imcomplete and at worst useless. If there is one thing I have learnt (through bitter experience) about electrics is that trial and error generally ends in tears or in this case probably melted wires.

The bentley books are good if you know what you are doing as they just contain knowledge not step by step how to's like the haynes.

Let me know if you want any help with sorting a diagram out.

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this Forum, as I as new to the world of VW Golf. I just got a Mk2 and it's great, except for one small problem, everytime I turn or the front Spot Lights, they blow the fuse for the left side headlamp.

I'm guessing that this is a result of a short circuit in the spot light wireing. If one of you could send me on the wireing diagram that you were talking about earlier i'd really appreciate it.
