Ok, I've ordered plenty of parts recently and am about to replace the wishbones and ball joints on both sides, along with all the bushes, including the ARB bushes. Anything to look out for, anyone done this?
TA.

yeah and unless you have a press you run the risk of screwing it up. best thing is to take the wishbones of and take them somewhere to get them pressed out and pressed in. shouldn't cost much at all.
or do you mean you bought the wishbones with the bushes in it already? if so once its all done its probably worth getting the tracking done. nonbe of it is hard though

Yeah, bushes already in there, plus I have access to full workshop facilities, lifts and all to do it anyway..
Tracking, yeah...good point.

As above, but would say it's vital to get both the toe & camber checked on a really good system or you'll end up screwing your tyres if you're not very lucky & the car will handle like c**p into the bargain.
-
Yeah, I was thinking about that, surely there is not much scope for camber adjustment though?
I do know someone with the kit to do it though.

Well today i tried to fit my new wishbones, Poly bushes and ball joints, had undone all of the bolts 17mm and 19mm by the way, when i tried to pull the pinch bolt along to remove the ball joints the bolt pulls toward the front of the car and hits the caliper bolt which had been tightened with an air gun so i had to put it all back together again as i couldnt undo the caliper bolt with a 2ft extension bar!!
So will be going to the friendly mechanics next door to work and asking them to Bzzzzzzzzz it off before trying again on friday
Sorry not nicking your post :embarassed: but wanted to point out this before you or anyone else had removed all of above only to encounter my problem!!!
I just placed the Polybush on top of wishbone with supplied grease and put them in between solid racking at work with the trolley jack underneath and matey wound up the jack until Bingo they shot into place  it does take 2 people though ..
Dave
-
So, wheel off, and caliper bolt off first...... workshop has air tools, so hopefully no problems !!
-
nah wheels on matey!!  :P
-
hmmm....... dunno if i should take mechanics advice from someone who runs like a lady boy !!

-
ha ha good point. i really run like steve austin!!

You could have someones eye out with that!
Let me know how you get on, it looks like I won't get space in the workshop until Sat 10th Dec now.
-
Will hopefully be doing tmrw or saturday ... Its fine using the trolley jack method, honestly it just shoots into place as it has no where to escape
Will post back when all finished or broken ...

Quick get it dirty its far too clean!
I did polly replacements all by myself with rubbish tools and no lift, does that mean im brill and get 10 gold stars?
-
I changed my wishbone in about 30 minutes?!? 3 bolts and thats about it?!
Hardest bit was trying to get Antiroll bar to fit back i properly!

Haha i read that about a Big bloke jumping on them until they flew into place without lube, i like your stlye
Just one thing, did you have to remove your bottom caliper bolt to remove the pinch bolt ie sliding out toward the front of the car and hitting it?!? As i couldnt undo my caliper bolts stopping the pinch bolt sliding out and in turn stopping the ball joint coming apart, i've have had to book it in at bloody mechanics as its going to need an air gun as i was using breaker bar, and it wasnt having it!!
Then its off for a laser aligment as it doesnt drive like it used to ... pulling left then right and tramlining!
Dave

I didnt have to remove caliper bolt when i did mine?!?
Just the pinch bolt using an extension bar if i remember correctly?! :undecided:
I replaced my wishbone after i hit a curb! HARD!

Yeah, alignment must be done!
doesn't take long.
-
Whats this pinch bolt your talking about? Is it the 2 big ones that hold the suspension strut to the hub?
-
The pinch bolt is the one that holds the ball joint in place. Have done the two bolts on the strut when i changed them and they weren't that bad....
Had the n/s wishbone all undone (with ball joint still attached as im replacing them too) it was just the pinch bolt left and as it slides out it hits the bottom caliper bolt head and that was it, as the caliper must have been tightened using an air gun on MAX setting!!!!
Booked in friday, its just annoying as I like to do it myself as i like to know its looked after and not just another Job no at a garage, although im mates with the guy whos doing it so its not that bad ..
-
OK so i've had the wishbones done BUT it drives so badly i'm worried about driving it as it seems to want to pull left and right at all speeds and doesnt correct itself from a left or right turn..(steering wheel doesnt straighten itself)
The steering wheel is also not straight when the wheels are, and it was before?
Going to try and get the tracking looked at this afternoon so will repost after..
Dave
-
Tracking mate, big time.
-
Bottled out of tracking as read in the Golf mag that if they adjust the tracking with the wrong side the track rod will need to be removed and reset????
Drove past KwikFit and thought mmm would they know or would they give a Toss?!
And to be honest i'm getting fed up with renewing all these parts and having more grief!
-
On some it can only be adjusted on one side, however - Tracking! Find yourself a reputable garage!
-
yeah, dont go to quick fit, find yourself an independent with 4 wheel laser alignment tool.
:santa:

Found myself a place with 4 wheel computerised tracking (like you suggested) and have had it done and what a difference it has made, it feels like brand new!!
Im so happy you wouldnt believe
The guy doing it was really great and really took his time and explained all aspects of it, when he finished he gave me a print out of figures and computer diagrams of my wheels and said the toe in or out or something was an inch out and would have been a danger to drive - whoops! He was also amazed that it was still as straight being a 15 year old car with the two axles being 0.00 which means spot on :nerd: (i know theres only one axle but thats how he explained it)
Just a follow up to say if you have fitted new/lowered supsension then get it on the computer set up as its the making of the car IMO
Thats the last present for the car this year!!
Dave
-
Cool. Yeah with any suspension work the alignment should be done. Makes a big difference to the drive dosen't it !

Cant believe what a diference it makes, really enjoy driving it again  Nice one Organisys
Only thing is i might need to replace the rear bushes as i think there knocking, and want to replace the front/rear ARB's with Neuspeed one's and also the rear suspension top bushes but not sure if it will mess up the work i've had done? I've already done all the front of the car, so i dont need to disturb the front...mmm decisions decisions
Dave
-
There is not much adjustability on the back end anyway. The rear beam bushed are a common failure, had to do mine a few months back.
If you fit ARB's to the front, you are going to have to re-do the alignment.
