Jumped in the mk 2 last night and a few things stopped working, all working better today though, really odd. Think it might be a bad earth or something to do with the damp. Anyway, just fishing for some other ideas:-
Heater fan only worked on full, then stopped completely. Now works on full only again. I'm guessing its something to do with the resistor.......remind me where it is guys, its not actually on the motor on the mk2 is it?
Lights were very dim and the inner spots were glowing............not sure whats happened there.......possibly bad earth again?
-
I belive the resistor is actually on the speed switch itself.
-
rich ive heard its easier to just replace the whole fan unit under the passenger side dash, when mine only worked on pos 3 thats wot i did n it all works ok now
-
Found the ballast resistor, its mounted just inside the front of the os front wing. Can't see much wrong there but smacking the fan housing seems to make it come on so I'm making progress lol.
Talk about bad earth, just checked the main chassis/engine earth and it was only on by one strand on the engine/gearbox........completely severed as soon as I touched it  Reckon that will fix a multitude of problems.........lucky I have a spare one tucked a way in my wiring box. Going to change that now before it gets dark.
-
Damn, damn and bollox
Whilst changing the earth strap I unwittingly allowed one of the smaller brown earths to touch the live just as I was connecting the main earth strap. Heard a short sizzle noise and now the bloody thing won't start
Fuel pump is now running continuously with the ignition just switched on so I reckon I've cooked the fuel pump relay........or the timer side of it anyway. Don't these have a fuse on the relay........mk1's used to.

I'm sulking and going down the social club

Ummmmm er folks - this very nice man, repairs aeroplanes for a living!
Fear of flying?????
And now he's gone on the Stella!

water is getting inside from the scuttle tray and dripping on your fan motor. when u wack the fan the bushes make contact and the fan works again.
-
I think the continuous running fuel pump is a sign of a cooked ecu
-
The resistor for the fan is mounted on the motor housing, easy to change and very cheap.
If you need to swap fuel pump relays then try the one on my vr6, it will be the same.

A good suggestion, water could be getting in there. Is the scuttle intact?

I hope you are wrong :undecided: But I do have a spare one so it may not be so bad :lipsrsealed:

Stop it you..........I can be very professional when I need to be.........but, yes, even I can have problems with these damn cars and why can't I seek advice..........given out plenty afterall
Funny actually, someone down my local mentioned that I was getting very aggressive 'by my standards (as in mr passive)' lateley.......... :undecided:
I had the nerve to tell someone off for turning off the skysports when we were all watching it

Just realised I haven't replied to this one...........thanks for that, good point, especiallly as it was sat around for a long time. Will check that

This is one of those threads where you don't know whether to laugh ir cry !

Ok step one, unplug that resistor thing bolted to the subframe, follow the yellow wires up and you'll find a connector near/under the airbox. No need for it to pass the MOT and will need to be removed if you ever decide to fit one o' them uprated headlight looms :)
If you have a Digi MK2 then I think you've fried the ECU, especially if the pump just runs continuously instead of priming.
If its a pre-90 I may have one if you need it but I can't confirm if it works as I nabbed it off a car in the scrappy, you live anywhere near Bracknell?
When you refit the main earth lead, clean both the connector & box with a wire brush till its proper shiny else you'll never get a good contact and just fry the next ECU, and the next, and the next etc ;)

Thanks for the offer mate. I do have a spare one somewhere in my collection of spare parts, no doubt its buried in the back of the shed somewhere.
Rik (dubslug) kindly sold me one yesterday along with a multitude of other useful bits and pieces

Replacement ECU fitted (dubslugs), car now running  Well done and thanks to all those that suggested ECU
Going to rip that old ECU apart and see if there is a fuse or something that might have gone........must be some sort of protection in there, surely?
Now for my next dilhema:-
