Hi everyone.
I recently bought a 2002 1.8 GTI T from a local dealer - not VW. Its an old lease car, so has done 60.000 miles. Its got full service history etc.
Last week, after owning the car for 2 months and doing about 2000 miles, the oil level light came on. I pulled over and checked the oil - only a tiny trace on the dip stick. I topped it up at the next garage and rang the dealer.
Both he, and a guy at VW servicing say that it is normal for the GTi to burn up to 1ltr of oil per 600 miles. Obviously im not arguing with the pro's, but just wondered if anyone else has the same prob? My mates dad owns a W plate GTi T and hes never had a problem. My 3 month warrantly runs out shortly, so if there is any work to be done I'd like to know about it now!
Thanks

mine doesnt burn any noticable amount of oil at all. i change it every 5000 miles which is roughly every 3 months.

That is burning way too much oil, imo.
I've topped mine up once since May 05. (Topped it from 25% of min/max markers upto about 90 %)

Apart from an oil change, I have only ever topped it up once with 1/4 litre other than that. and I've done 13,000 miles.
Get it checked if i were u

is it on a long service intervals??
Reason I ask is cos my dad has to top up his 1.4  every 1000 miles and the answer he got was cos it's on long service intervals!! Not sure how true that is but could be worth checking.......

they will make up any excuse for the burning oil if it saves them having to actually look into solving the problem.

my 2.0 doesnt even drink that much!! and my type of engine is renown for oil drinking
i have to top mine up every 1700miles tho

I agree with you lot, but looked in the manual after your comments and it even says that a litre per 1000km is possible in there, depending on your style of driving.
What does being on long service intervals mean? and how do I know if I am?
Any ideas wot could result in this much of an oil loss?
Thanks for your replies.

With longlife you only need the oil changing every 20,000

Mine goes from full (on the dipstick) to just over half in 5000 miles, so tolerable. Yours sounds way too much. Are you sure it is burning and not leaking? i'd expect to see some blue exhaust smoke with that kind of consumption.
-
Mine usually needs a little top up before service is due every 10k, but no more than 1/4 of a litre like Gaz said.
-
I have heard that they do tend to burn a bit of oil when they are getting "run in" but that seems a bit much to me

I have the same problem with my car. Typically it gets oil every 2000 miles are there abouts. Mine is the 2.0 GTI. There is no leaks and my dealer says its normal!!! I am abit sick of seeing my oil light to be honest!
P.S Stu - 1.8T your car is stunning. Its the same in every way to mine only mine is of the non turbo variety... you have excellent taste!

My 2.0 8v GTi MK4 uses a litre every 800 - 1200 miles... No leaks and no signs of smoke. The main dealer says this is 'normal'?
