 Hi all, just introducing myself. Have been a member of "Tyresmoke" ( hope it's not a dirty word  ) for a while and wanted to look at the Mk5 scene from a different angle.
I have owned my Mk5 GTi DSG for almost 4 months now and I must say, I am very, very pleased. I’ve now covered over 4k miles and the car just seems to get better and better. I plumbed for Tornado Red with 18†Monza’s, Sunroof and the M.F.Steering Wheel inc paddles. I didn’t consider the Zenons worth the extra cash or the Leather.
I have owned a few GTi’s over the years, from Mk1, Mk2 ( Not a Mk3  ) and an R32.
The “R†was a bit thirsty to say the least  and I defected to a Mk5 GT TDi.
Anyway, back in the GTi fold now and loving every minute.

Hi m8, I have a very similar car to yourself but with 17" wheels.
All the best with it

Hi 5hy5ter
It occurred to me that perhaps the reason things are a wee bit quiet on this section is that possibly MkV GTI owners are too busy driving around with silly grins on their faces to spend time online...........
Whatever the reason, as a relatively new memeber myself I'd like to say welome, I hope your car's living up to expectations.

Hi 5hy5ter,
Can you share you experience of the differences between mk5 gti and the mk4 r32 ? is it more sporty on your new gti in terms of the handling? and better performance on the twisty road than r32 ?
thanks!~ as i am also new in this column

Thanks for the replies all.
Ali... Yeah.. Deffo the silly Grins M8... Its a quality drive.
Hi Blue610.
The main reason for the change from the R32 was the fuel economy  I was experiencing 18 - 19 mpg on a regular basis. Not the kind of car you can drive steady. As for the handling, I found the "R" to be rather front end heavy, which is no surprise with that big V6 lump up front. Understeer was a problem when really pushing hard. MAin problem was I came from a Scooby, so chuckability was nowhere near as good.
Love the GTi, especially the DSG Gearbox. Fantastic bit of kit. Some have likened it to a playstation game, but thats unfair, it is so much more than that. Very sofisticated and in IMO 4 gearbox's in One. D mode for your normal in town driving. D mode with Manual / paddle change. S Mode for manic auto gear changes at near to 7200 rpm .. S Mode with paddle shift. Manual / sequential change on the lever ( up and down the box like a touring car ) It's FAB
Cheers all.... Nice to see I wasn't left on my own.

hi 5hy5ster
thanks for your past experience, do you think the performance of gti on the twisty road is much better than r32? is it becasue the weight of gti is a lot lighter?
do u think gti is better with 17" wheel than 18"?
