Title: Mk 3 8 Valve Gearbox problem
Post by: Monkey matt on 28 November 2005, 17:30
I have a 1993 Mk3 8v with a crunching noise when changing into 2nd gear going up or down the box. It only does it when the engine is cold IE oil temperature showing less than 50c on the computer. Once it is over 50c it's fine. The gearbox is fine other than that. Is this a common problem?
Also the fuel consumption is very heavy in colder weather. The computer shows no more than 23mpg and the car does not get up to working temp for ages. In warmer weather 15c plus it runs at 90c water temp all day long and it returns low 30's mpg. The car is fitted with a full Magnex exhaust system with cat replacement tube and a K&N filter.
Any ideas ?

Common on veedub 'boxes mate. Change the fluid and get some slick 50 in there, it'll do wonders for it....
And welcome BTW...

Yes mate, that's what I meant by "change the fluid". 'Slick 50' is some extra slippy stuff used to protect gearboxes. You can get it in Halfrauds and places like that...
