I've had my '99 1.8 20v nonturbo for almost two years now,and although they're not the quickest gti's about, it doesn't seem to be going as well as I think it should!
It's done about 87k and is due for a service in january, but just seems a bit sluggish at the mo.It only seems to want to really go from 4000rpm onwards! Is this normal?
Could it just be the need for a set of new plugs etc,or is there anything else anyone out there can suggest, the infamous maf maybe!
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Oh and one more question, have all 1.8's got variable valve timing?

If the non turbo is the same as the turbo then they aint all got VVT, thats all I know sorry mate :undecided:
If you can last til your service then VW should connect it to VAGCOM and will let you know then if the MAF is at fault

sounds like a 'maf' related prob to me.... but then saying that they dont do alot till 4000 rpm anyway, ive had mine a longtime now and i think you just get used to it, or of youve driven something quicker then get back in it it always feels slow lol.....
all non turbo 20v gti's have 'vvt'

Or if it is REALLY sluggish and struggles to get over 50mph, could be your catalyst. At least those were the symptoms when ours went, was fine driving around town, just REALLY slow and would not rev beyond 3kish
