Title: How do you tell it's a 16v?

I just got my mk3 16v, apparently, but can't find anything, anywhere to indicate whether the car is indeed a 16v or if it's an 8v. The V5 just says Golf GTI, and there's no indication under the bonnet of whether there's 8v or 16v. How can I tell?? ???

goto "elephant.co.uk" and do an insurance quote, and use that Reg... see if it says

GTI 8v or 16v!

I'm sure 16v are badged under the bonnet, and 8v aren't..........oops :(

8v = 'part of engine missing' by some descriptions

16v.... has this  under the bonnet....

errm...

my v5 also says GOLF GTI 16V


heres a collage pic of my car with shots of the badges where the 16v bits are (front+back) however when i bought my car the front badge was missing.

Doh!! No DOHC part under MY bonnet. No 16v on the V5. Elephant.co.uk says 8v GTi for my reg. SH!TE. Don't I feel like I got shafted!!  >:(

Sorry mate I dont mean to take the piss but you really should have checked it out before buying it.  If it was from a car dealer and if it has 16valve on the receipt you may be able to get your money / some of it back.  If you bought it private you may be in trouble mate, how much did you pay?

I feel your pain, man.

Give the seller hell.  There must be "descriptions" violations if the car was advertised and receipted as a 16v, but is really an 8v.

The second-hand car market is a case of "let the buyer beware", but you do have some protection.  I hope it's enough.

I paid ?2500 for a mint '94 M reg 3dr with 91k and FVWSH. Don't actually feel like I got that bad a deal really. If it had been a 16v it would've been the bargain of the year in my mind. Hell, I'm happy with the car and I guess that's the important thing. Cheers guys.
