Title: How many of you have suffered from a cutting out 8v engine?
Post by: growla666 on 25 November 2005, 23:11
I've only had my Golf mk 3 GTI for two weeks and so far it has spent a week in my local VW dealer. It just started cutting out inexplicably whilst driving. Having only done 100 miles since I bought it I'm now £352 worse off for a speed sender replacement (courtesy of the VW dealers diagnostic machine saying the engine speed sender was defective). The dealer changes the part, empties my wallet of a wad of cash. Happily I take my keys, drive off home and the car does exactly the same 20 f******g yards down the road! The car is now back in VW Chalfont, red faces all round and I'm seriously off VW golfs and their expensive, ineffective stealerships.  I'm gonna remind them about them ECU relay that seems to be cropping up all over the forum as well as celaning the butterfly valave thingy. Anything else I should be telling them to check - at their expense??

How many of you have had the same problem?

Yeah Mate...I think were all affected!!!
I have had a mark1 Gti ( no problems ) mark2 Gti ( no problems ) mark3 Gti ...as yes you've guessed it....bloody thing keeps cutting out!!!
Like most of you...I have gone through the motions and most of my wallet...replacing anyting and everything from Oil sensor,Ht,Dizzy,Relays,Coil,Rotar arm to find out according to Diagnostic machine....Crank Sensor faulty £125 from main dealer....things were going great...1 month no problems till guess what!!!!!....now i'm back to square one....thanks to forum advice will try cleaning out throttle body....Iv'e tried everything else.....Surely Vw could help us out by designing a better system like the good old Mark1/2 engine systems! :embarassed: Rob.

Mine cuts out every now and again , normally on over run when changing down gears . The best way ive found to make it stop is to take it for a blast up the motorway .

had mine a month now and cuts out  quite often
only when slowing down i will get the throttle body off and clean it out when i get a chance.
im a firm beleiver in using main dealers as a last resort..
cant justify parting with the cash....

Mine did it once when i first bought it. It started wanting to stall at every junction and set of traffic lights and i had to rev the arse of it to keep it running until 5 mins from home when it finaly gave up and cut out compleatly.   I then started it up again and it then ran spot on and hasnt done it again to this day!!!

Now i'v posted this it will probably cut out on the way to work tomorrow

i had a cutting out a little while ago when the power just went  and it concerned me... all i did in the end was replace the plugs with main dealer ones and not had the trouble since..

Do you still have all the dash lights etc when it cuts out ?

My GTI is an 8v on a 96 plate just before Xmas, whenever i stopped at a junction it would loose power and cut out on me.All i have done is stripped down the throttle valve and gave it a real good clean and mine has not cut out since.I agree with everyone else don't go to the stealers unless it is a last resort.

Clean out the throttle valve thing thats what I was told this morning by a specialist friend of mine

Why oh why do people go to dealers to get ripped off, find a specialist you trust, 9 times out of 10 they're all trained by VW and they've just set up on there own

Opel mine was the same would cut out at any time seed or situation 90mph on the motorway was the worst, solved it by replacing the ECU return relay about £15 from vag for the AGG engine that was over 25,000 milesago and it has not cut out once since.

I was looking at MK2 & MK3 throttles the other day in the scrappy, as you do
And I have a theory as to why the MK3 is worse for cutting out than the MK2.  If you look at the throttle & inlet, the ISV on a MK2 is plumbed into the inlet boot, and the crank case breather runs to the throttle body.  On a MK3 its the opposite way round, which means on a MK3 all the black oily crap blown out of your crank breather gets sucked straight thru the ISV!  But not so on a MK2, the ISV only sucks clean air.

Just a thought ;)

Just fixed mine see my post above................

Seems that the coil pack can give a spark when in open air but when in the cylinder the spark is not man enough....this is my 3rd coil pack in 188,000 miles

MK3 coilpacks are sh!te, the MK2 coil on the other hand is ard as nails, in fact many fitted nowadays have been passed on from VW to VW for many years

The thread by scooterist is all about cutting out Mk3, hall sender and that.

Only problem I had with mine was trouble starting which the guys on here diagnosed as dodgy temp sensor. Garage then told me temp sensor and replaced it. Nice that you guys are on your game.
