Wind noise!?  That's probably coming from the top of the door or the windscreen seal.  I've heard of ticking speedo's (dodgy cable) but never a wind noise!  That said, I'm learning all the time on this forum!

Deffo coming from behind the dash area not ticking its a rotational sound but sounding similar to wind noise but it only happens after 40-50 mph ?? Gonna have a look 2mo

Does it have an MFA? If so, vacuum pipe for the MPG reading? Check the reading and see if it makes sense or not.

i reckon i have the same prob mate.  just started - hit 40 - 50mph when engine is cold you get this whirring noise coming from the speedo!  (seems to die off when warmed up good and proper and mfa mpg reading is def talking bollocox to me)

Dino - should i be ripping the dash to bits to see if the vacum pipe is loose??

I used to have exactly the same thing on my old 8v. Loud whirring noise at about 40-50 but only during the winter on cold mornings. Can't tell you what it was but it seems to be fairly common.

If the MPG reading is silly then it might indicate a loose or broken pipe somewhere. Check the pipe inside the engine bay for breaks etc. A rotational noise would suggest a sticking speedo cable. May need oiling or replacing. Not had any trouble with one before so not sure how easy this is. If its a sucking sort of noise I'd say the vacuum pipe would be a likely candidate. Either way I'd remove the clocks and have a look, push things in and see how it goes!

My job tomorow this one got a spare dash to try out first, Could just be a bad connection but ive a feeling its the speedo unit in need of oil?? Shall let you know how i get on. My mfa is fine giving the normal readings i'd expect... Watch this space

Its either the speedo cable or clocks frozen. I used to get this too. Id Replace the speedo cable 1st

It might also be the milage counter. When it does it see if your miles count away or stick.

It's strange now cos the noise has completely gone after doing 40 miles under 30mph i can't get it to happen no matter how quick i go

probably cos its warmed up and freed itself. Wait till we have a big frost again.

i noticed that the needle on the speedo started wibbly wobbling a bit when it makes the whirring noise.  think i'll get myself a new speedo cable.  not a great problem considering it's 16 years old huh..

usually the noise is from the cable rubbing against something as it rotates. eventually the cable either wears out a notch in rubbing against. but if its rubbing against metal it'll be there for a long while!
