I'll give my mk4 buddies a go since the garage boffins were no help :P
A chance to get me sticky mitts on a six speeder out of a 52 plate gti turbine.
question - will it couple up to my 99 1.8 gti non turbo??
if so what effect will it have???

I can't comment on wether it till fit your non turbo, but I can tell you about the 6 speed. I had the 5 speed in my old 1.8t 150 and have the 6 speed in my new 1.8t 180.
I'm not so sure about the 6 speed myself. With the 5 speed I seem to remember it would do 41 in 1st, 72 in 2nd, 100 in 3rd, 120 in 4th and 140+ in 5th. Motorway cruising at 70 was about 3500 rpm I think.
But with the 6 speed they closed the ratios down, I'll have to 'test' it, but I think 1st is about 39 and 2nd is about 65 so you get less speed in gears and have to work more. Motorway cruising at 70 is about 3300 rpm I think, so I'm not sure what the advantage is, 6th is certainly not an 'overdrive' gear.
I've got a couple of mates with GTI 150 Diesels, I'm sure they said motorway cruising is much lower/quieter revs in 6th gear.
I'll check my speeds in the 6 speed again, but I'm pretty sure the speeds in the 5 speed are accurate as I've done over 170,000 in 2 different GTI 5 speeds.
Not sure if the "speed in gears' tests are the best, but there you have it, would be interested to see what other people think.

not sure as to wether its a straight fit, if it does fit to the block i think its a bigger clutch, then all the selector bits and bobs, ireckon you should stick with your 5 speed, ive got a non turbo, there nippy but there only 125bhp, id spend the money on a remap, miltek free flow cat and system, and a induction kit, this will take you up to around 148bhp, which aint that far of the standard 150bhp turbo! i think id buy a six speed gear knob, and spend the time thrapping 148 horses about rather than changing gear alot more times.

I did some brief tests today, but roads were so busy could only do 1st and 2nd, haha..
1st was 39mph, 2nd was 62mph
motorway 6speed in a GTi 180
70mph in 6th 2800rpm
80mph in 6th 3200rpm
So the revs are lower at motorway speeds than in the 5 speed and for me it is a benefit due to my car having done 11,000 since June, mainly motorways! I guess the tighter 1st and 2nd ratios help with acceleration to 60, the car is certainly quicker than my previous, but thats mainly down to the 30 extra horses I would think!
I did like the 72mph in 2nd 'feature' on the old 5 speed and to be honest would have liked that gear box with a 6th overdrive gear for cruising.

cheers lads.
the box would of been a free-bee, just the cost to make it fit.
Will stick to tried and tested mods.
mucho grassy-arse (spanish footballer with no legs) ;D ;D

hope of some help rik, would rather see the tuning options than the six speed option much more fun!
