Title: 80k Service Price
Post by: Hobnob on 22 November 2005, 15:03
The following is taken from an email I have just received from a VW garage when asking for a quote for a 80k service

80000 service                 Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£259.04
brake fluid                       47.95
Cambelt                         Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£272.54
Puncture repair               Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£   10.95

Does this sound like a reasonable price? I am still waiting for a reply from a local VW specialist

What model is it?

IIRC 1.8 T's need the cambelt done every 60k :undecided:

Just posted this in another topic , My 1.8t was £135 inc for a 60k service and the TDi 130 was £180 inc for the 80k, so your service quote sounds a bit steep

Service schedule for cambelt is actually 120k - with first 'inspections' at 60k. it all depends how 'lucky' you are feeling.

Strange I have heard that about the cambelt change before but the VW garage I rang for the quote above said it should also be done every 4 years and since mines a 2000 model will need doing!! does this sound right? I mean on inspection it may very well need doing

I'm waiting for a quote from a VW specialist in Durham who's initial quotes are looking around the £400 mark, I'm also going to contact a local (non VW Specialist) garage this lunch time who friends take their cars to so I can compare quotes. When talking these sorts of prices though if the non specialist garage is a lot cheaper I'll just go with them, I'm not paying hundreds just for a more reputable stamp in the book

I don't think anyone would suggest NOT doing the cambelt at 80k. I'm just gambling - plus the fact i won't be keeping the car long. However, officially it is 120k.... but car companies (esp Peugeot) have been known to stretch this to make the cars more appealing to fleets as this costly service won't be needed.

I believe a snapped cambelt is quite a regular occurence for low mileage 306 gti's

Your not wrong there!!! I owned one previously to the Golf, & am still a member on www.306gti6.com. There was never a shortage of cambelt snap stories on there! There was loads of cases of 30-40k mile snaps/water pump/tensioner/idle roller failure, when Peugeot recommended a cambelt ONLY change at 60k!!! Bloody French!

Luckily, it never happened to me though, (The cambelt kit wasn't replaced til about 60k on mine, so I was prob a bit lucky! A lot of people had probs with tapping from badly rebuilt cylinder heads!

I'm personally going to get my Golf's belt, w.p., tensioners etc done at 60k, for peace of mind..... Not worth risk of £1000+ worth of head damage, IMO.
