I have a 100% standard 1991 Mk II 8v GTi with 15" BBS RA's.
I need 4 new tyres and am wondering if to change to 195/50x15 as everyone here seems to!
My question is will the car look much different? I want it to look standard as possible, does it mean the car will sit 5cm lower??
Also what tyres would people recommend, I've looked through some old posts and most people seem to buy from either http://www.mytyres.co.uk or http://www.motor-world.co.uk
Motor World have Yoko A539 at £36 each but I heard they are not good in the wet?

these will be slightly wider than the stock tyres, but as the '50' is a percentage of the width the tyrewall & rolling radius will be exactly the same as the VW standard fitment 185/55/15 tires :)
-
you should have no probs with a539's they were the tire we had to use in road sallons, worked real good.
-
Have the same fitment on mine- all fine. I was told that this was the standard fitting on the 15" wheels anyway, and will also mean that your speedo reads exactly the same as it should (to within 1.5mph). Go for the Eagle F1s. Got mine thru mytyres, and they are superb in wet or dry.

Defo go to 195/50/15s, i have them on my BBS RAs and the car feels much better and ride aint much different from standard i.e hard
They also look much better but not in a modified way!
Mill Auto Services near Taunton, Somerset have ace prices and stock both budget and high quality tyres.

Thanks guys!
Good to know that they will be better AND cheaper!
Still undecided which brand to go with, looks like either the Eagle F1s or the a539's ?
I'll see how they price up, though I would rather pay to get the better tyre if it was going to make a difference.
-
Eagle F1s are widly regarded as the best, but they do cost more :)
-
does anyone run these tyres on standard wheels on lowered suspension? im running standard 15" BBS's with a fair drop...tyres tucked in the arches all round, would the 195-50's catch on standard arches or would i need 195-45's?

I am running 195/50/15 Eagle F1's (Superb) on 40mm drop Eibach springs. No rubbing.
You will be fine.

F1's are the best, I cannot big them up enough. Yoko A539's are good in the dry, but as for wet performance on Yoko's, I have tried Prelli Dunlop Conti Yoko's Budgets and Yoko are worse than budgets in the wet. I got my F1's fitted for £48 all in. About a £5-10 dearer than the rest but boy are they worth it.

Im not sure how low it is cos its on coilovers :undecided:

From what I recall quite a few people changed from 185/55 15s to 195/50 15s on the mk2s because the they could get the 195 50 15s a lot cheaper than the 185/55s but I don't know if the 185/55s have come down in price.  :undecided:
One thing though , I don't know whether it may affect your insurance as they wouldn't be the recommended tyre size that VW originally fitted .  :nerd::undecided:
But they do look better  (though even at the correct pressures to me they seem a little under inflated )

Yokohama AVS for better all round performance if wishing to purchase Yokohama, the A539 a little harder wearing and therefore not as grippy, they do struggle a little in the wet but if you are running an Eibach rollbar on the back and front the car characteristics are again totally different.

A quick word of warning!
myTyres are taking 5-7 days to ship the Goodyear F1's from Germany to me.
This is fine as they are so cheap but not good as the car is now stuck in a garage for a week!

Got 195/50/15 Uniroyals on mine with an 85mm drop, tis fine, the only thing that scrubs is front spoiler and mudflaps!
-
thats what i wanted to hear Si...good man!
-
Those F1's sound the business.
Where did you get them from in Germany, were the much cheaper?
-
I believe reserves meant that mytyres.co.uk get their stock of F1s in from Germany and it's taking 7 days.
I've got 195/45/15 at the moment on my new Ronals, I may jump up to 50s as they are so much cheaper
