Matey-matey have a good buying guide here: http://matey-matey.com/golf_buying_guide.shtml
Have you got any specific queries?
-
I would look for a J Reg because there the latest ones. Look for electric windows, power steering, accident damage, rust, history etc etc.. there are also alot of common faults with MK2's so check out the previous forum pages.
Good luck :)

Hey Fran ;D
Bluemk2 is right, check out the forum, this will give you some idea of what things can go wrong, and also give you ideas for questions to ask when you are looking.

8v Pro - there are none
8v Con - milk float over taking you
16v Pro - it has power and acceleration
16v Con - rev limiter, cops, previous owner, smoking engines etc

someone has to. lol
i'm sorry, couldn't help myself. we are all bias towards our cars. Even my Nissan Bluebird has a good point. Not sure what it is, but i'm sure it has at least one. I can be certain its not handling, nor speed, nor looks. There has to be something.

yup, found its good point. its security system.

Hey Fran
I have an '86 1.8 8v....I'll get me coat......
Its ok......quickest car I have had.....I seem to overtake lots of things in it, and will probably Marc Bolan myself one day...but at least I will have a grin on me face ;D

Get an 8V and take it to TSR, then wave the 16V boys goodbye!

yep, and then wave goodbye to my milk float as it also passes you...
if you go mk2, make it a 16v.

Tin is right, the 8v is good car, but lets be honest everyone, the 16v is in a different league.
-
Ok - will throw this into the equasion - My budget is a bag of sand (grand) - 8v or 16v (also needs to be 5 door).
I was going to opt for MK II 8v as:
More choice
8 valves less on it to go wrong
Figured that at this level of budget - would rather go for a good 8V than a ropey 16v
Any thoughts that could persuade me otherwise.
PS - I have a really old car mag in the loft somewhere (87 - 88) I think which does a review of the 16V golf when it first came out - going to dig it out this w/end :)
