The mk3 gti is a well built car, but not very well powered for a gti (115 bhp). I would suggest going for the 16v (150bhp) or the vr6 (174bhp) as these have also dropped a lot in price.

I'm going for a 20vT in my mk2. Should liven the drive to work and back up a bit ;D

It's already fairly rapid and scary at times with the doctored 8v ;D

Back in 92/93 or whenever the 8v mk3 was launched it bombed. Big time.

The car press felt it should of been the Golf GL, and the 16v which was launched afterwards was felt that it only just deserved the GTI badge.

Mk3s are great. If you like ferries.

The only Mk3 worth anything, and trust me, its worth alot, is the VR6. Pity is had such useless stable mates.

I think the 16v gets unfair stick because of the weak ass 8v..

Yeah I agree with 'overseer' -

The 16V doesnt really sit in the middle of the Mrk3 Gti scale, it nudges alot closer the the VR6 end of the scale.

Booting a VR6 around is lots of fun till you notice you can actually see the petrol gauge moving down!!  :o

the 16v gets unfair stick because they shoved a 150bhp engine in a ferry.

you need at least 10,000 lbs of thrust to get any performance out of that lardy body shell.

I think the 16v is a good car, not much slower than the mk2 16v really. The vr6 is just that bit better. The only real problem with the mk3s is the awful standard suspension, makes the car feel like a boat. Not a difficult thing to change really..
