Title: weird today,
Post by: Haribo! on 13 November 2005, 03:52
twas driving home, not ragging or anything.and had to stop at some lights, for some reason my revs wouldnt drop and were really high, so much so that when i attempted to turn the car off to restart it even with the key out it wouldnt die properly, i had to stall it to stop it, then by the time i got home it was fine again...... is this the choke or something els, im allready aware that my stupid automatic choke doesnt work anyway but its never done that before, i want a manuel choke

God damn Carbs!!! Mine is playing up aswell mate, must be cold weather.
It sounds like either your auto choke stuck open or throttle was stuck? I could advise you to strip and oil all moving parts of carb and clean out jets, but if i were you get either a manual choke, (position is already there in dash) or get Weber carb with manual choke?!

I bet your inlet manifold coolant channel o'ring has gone :)

ummm, that sounds like the problem i have, i dont fancy trying to tackle changing all that tho..... i just drive it, whenever i touch an engine its never a good thing, what might a garage charge me to do it? what parts do i need?

Title: Re: weird today,

i hate carbs and i hate automatic chokes, i drempt last nite that cars just worked, they were built and then they worked forever and nothing broke or wore out, plus they ran off water, these tiny differences would easily make this world a better place

you need the o'ring and an inlet manifold gasket, took me about an hour to do once I found the right tool for the job!

hmmm, what tools do i need? ill have to go and buy them cause i dont have many, im not looking forward to this, not too good or lucky with car stuff, sticking arches on is one thing, playing around with mechanical things is abit out of my league, but i guess ill find out... maybe it wont be that bad

sounds like a bit of carb freeze to me.  :undecided:
Title: Re: weird today,

carb freeze? whats that?
Title: Re: weird today,
Post by: Si on 13 November 2005, 17:18
Nah, its not cold enough for that if your driving slowly?!
I get Carb freeze on the motorway or on a dual carrageway over 60mph. When a Carb freezes, it only splutters or has a really bad flat spot, most of the time the car just feels flat when driving.  :undecided:

click here (http://www.gasco.org.uk/upload/docs/GASCo%20paper%20final.doc)

I know that example is for a plane but it essentially works in the exactly the same way. Its been cold enough round here to ice up windows and things.

hmm, the o ring thing sounded more like what ive got, i guess ill find out tho

Hmm, going off subject a bit (sorry Haribo), but Slick, it says about Manually heating Carb on a plane, its given me an idea...how would i heat my Carb? Heated blanket or sumthing?
Title: Re: weird today,
Post by: Haribo! on 13 November 2005, 17:41
hair dryer?
Title: Re: weird today,

Ive got a 12v Caravan hairdryer... re-route the cable through the bulkhead to ciggy lighter, gaffa tape hairdryer to carb!!!
Title: Re: weird today,

heads would turn as a car that sounds like a hair dryer blows down the road, anyway i thought the carb liked cold air once the engine was hot?

Best bet would be to cake it in a antifreeze spray, and something that will not allow moisture to settle and freeze on it, something like rainex might be an idea, or spraying the carb with a wet start spray so that water cannot penetrate onto the surface and freeze. Best ideas i can think of atm.

Damn Slick, how do u think of these things? I think my idea was better tho?!
You will never turn me to the dark side!

heh heh, many problems i have had in the past, and just a logical view on things that are technical. Bit of a geek when it comes to things like that,  :nerd: although i am proud of the fact, it has got me out of enough scrapes before.

you need a hex bit (allen key) and a long thin extension to reach between the inlet & exhaust manifolds, and something to turn it with.  Something like this:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=10334

There are 6 bolts in total, and the second & third from the right are tricky to reach so make sure you can get to them before you start!

The way I did it was with a small ratchet, extension and I found a socket that would hold hex key to reach em :)

My old 1.6 driver throttle used to stick too.  More often than not, the throttle butterfly on the carb would dry up and become stiff.  A bit of WD40 sorts it out.

Carb freeze also used to get me whenever the air turned cold, but it was easily sorted.  There is (or should be) a pipe that comes up from the exhaust manifold which carries heat to the airbox.  If you have the standard airbox, check the hose is intact.  You may also need to check the vacuum hoses to make sure the flap opens when its cold to let the heat to the carb.  If you have a K&N bolt-on filter, get some of that aluminium heater pipe from halfords (or any good spares store...) and connect it to the heat outlet and tie it up so that the other end rests against the carb and the filter.  Point it somewhere else in the summer.

I like carbs...they're so simple...once you've had a carb car for a while, you almost always know whats wrong with it!

Aye I know what you mean! Within a few months of owning my 1.6 the engine was running as sweet as a nut, but after over 6 months of ownership my 1.8 GTI still isn't quite right, there are just so many things that can go wrong!

wd40 it is then and if that doesnt work then ill try the o`ring thing, is it possible that the throttle cable might be sticking? i want to be sure before i start taking the whole thing apart, i hate trying to fix this car, im no mechanic...

Take the airbox off then get someone to press the pedal while you watch the linkage, you'll see if its sticking or not!

even if it only sticks every so often? do i need to wait until it does it again?
