Title: Ignition problems
Post by: crouchy on 01 November 2003, 14:32
I have got a mk3 golf gti 8v untill today the car was running fine. When i went to start it this morning the engine turned over but the car didnt start, I have check the HT lead which is fine, the Dizzy cap is fine and the rotary arm is also fine but i am getting no spark from any of the leads could this be that the coil has gone or could it be that the immoboliser has gone. The car has got power going to the coil but i am geting nothink out. ANY IDEAS ? ???

I think if the immobiliser has gone then there will be no power to the coil (i might be wrong). I would change the coil.

Freeky - exactly the same thing happened to mine yesterday.  I came on here to search for the answer. :-[

Did you find out whether it is the coil?  In my case I just pulled up in a car park, switched the engine off.  Then 2 mins later went to start it again and there was no spark.

My car doesn't have an immobiliser.  Is there anything else it can be?  The dizzy, rotor, leads and plugs are all in good nick.

Test for a spark from the coil to distributor, then for a spark from the leads. Could be a loose connection on the coil.

If it was the immobilser the car would not turn over.

I agree with golfvr6, check the coil  :P

On mine it was the coil amplifier (available as a seperate part within the coil) - now fixed ?40 for the part.

Whats the coil got to do with the engine turning over on the starter?

Cos its part of the HT circuit.

Indeed, but the engine will still turn over on the starter.

I have the same problem and have VAG COM diagnostic tool. (have already tried plug leads, dizzy etc, and swapped coil with another that I know works)

The VAG COM arrived last week and reads fault code - Immobiliser Implausible signal...??
Had the immobiliser checked by a specialist, nothing wrong with it. He did say however that often there can be a problem with the chip in the ignition key that in turn deactivates the immobiliser ???

So, took the fascia off around the ignition barrel and there is a plastic collar with a thick black wire leading off it into the loom. It looks like some sort of device that would read from the key when placed in the barrel....

Have read before that people have renewed ignition switches on this forum before and the problem has been solved.. can anyone else help on this.?

Cheers
